1991: THE YEAR PUNK BROKE - The not-yet-released-on-DVD classic documenting the 1991 European tours of Nirvana and Sonic Youth by filmmaker Dave Markey. The Year Punk Broke captures the on and off stage antics of both bands as they unknowingly launch a decade of alterna-madness.

(THIS IS KNOWN AS) THE BLUES SCALE - A 42 minute feature post-script to "1991 The Year Punk Broke" featuring never before seen performance and off-stage material from Sonic Youth and Nirvana

All proceeds of this screening will benefit Flywheel. The event will also feature pre and post screening discussion with Thurston Moore, Byron Coley and local film nut Bill Dwight

sayz Thurston: "THE YEAR PUNK BROKE was initially conceived of as a tour film that Sonic Youth would issue on VHS tape way way back in 1991. We asked our filmmaking pal Dave Markey to fly to the UK and meet us there and document the tour. Dave had been a confidante of ours throughout the 80s, capturing what we were doing live everytime we’d cut across the west coast. He was there when Nirvana played with us in 1989, after their Bleach LP was released and he became good friends with those guys. So the fact that Nirvana was going to join us on this tour was an invitation to killer times. As it was most people in the bands and the crew kind of ran away from Dave’s camera, so I put myself in the position of helping him get some kind of active footage and am a consistent ham of a presence in the footage. We edited everything down while Nirvana became supernova, and when finished the record company wanted it to be a big release to capitalize on grunge-mania. As it was there was so much film shot that Dave put together a second film entitled “This is known as the Blues Scale”, which is something Kurt Kobain uttered to Dave while negotiating a leap back onto a festival satge after flying off into the audience. This 2nd film is RARELY seen and for anyone at all interested in this time period of underground American punk rock and all it’s drama, it is a must see. Come as you are dudes!"
