My birthday is coming up, I've been saving cash, and I probably be able to afford a decent synth. I really want one of these, but I don't know which. Any one have any experience with them?

There are pros and cons to both. For example, the Alesis has drum kits built in, which is something that I want (but I suppose I could probably make up for it with Fruity Loops), but isn't as easy to control sound wise. The Microkorg has a lot of easy to use control and more ways to control (that I could figure out anyway), but no drums, and really small keys, but it also has a vocoder. I've played with both, the Microkorg more because it was easier to figure out, but I wasn't really able to reach a conclusion.

Anyone have/played/tried/humped them? If so, what do you think?

My friend has that MicroKorg and I've played it quite a few times. It's def. a nice little keyboard. You could prob. find a decent used one on Ebay for like $300.

I love Korg products.

Also, if you mainly use Fruity Loops or other synth software like that, then you might want to consider just getting a nice midi controller for your computer.

I'm really digging the Korg too, and not so much the Micron, but doing some reading (mostly on people on youtube who have both) and they all prefer the Alesis, but I'm not seeing or hearing it yet.

I guess it might come down to which one has the best/most sounds you are looking for.

True. A lot of the you tube videos were boring trance house type stuff, which isn't really what I'll be doing with it.

A lot of the Korg sounds might come off like that, but it all really comes down to the kind of music you are playing. My friend who has it uses it for making weird ass beats/soundscapes for his "hip hop" or rap or whatever you want to call it.

If I can find a good drum program, or one that I like anyway, I'll probably end up going with the Korg. It was easier, more fun, I liked the sounds more. So if I can get drums from elsewhere, why bother with the Alesis, unless someone can explain any benefits of the Alesis that I'm not getting, other than the larger keys, which isn't that big of a deal.

I think Alesis is much more known for their drum machines and sound equipment while Korg is much more known for their synths/weird sound generators.

In terms of a good drum program, you can always just use Fruity Loops and plug in wav samples of drum sounds from a really nice Roland drum machine....these samples are pretty easy to find. It might be kind of tedious to do using the piano roll function, but it's pretty fun and you'll get the hang of it. At worst, you could always mess around with Hammerhead which is really fun too.

I am downloading Fruity Loops now. I had demos of it before, but I couldn't really figure it out.

I looked at that one, but I don't think it is really what I'm after. I want something that isn't so computer oriented. I like having the MIDI capabilities and everything, but that should be all there is too it.

At this point in time you'd be better off buying guns. Or a good axe and sharpening tools. Stock up on olive oil and batteries.

I'd go with the Korg. I have a Roland Groovebox that I absolutely love for sequencing and drum programs and I love my Juno-6 for a synth. It's the kind Hot Hot Heat used on Scenes 1-13. It's killer. I reccomend just using a drum program until you can afford to purchase a decent drum machine. The Alesis' drum function is worth the lack of quality you'll have with it compared to the Korg.
