Zappa is creative... so is Beefheart. I like Beefheart's ideas more.

Zappa is a fuckhead. I know this is unrelated, but people say a band like Wolf Eyes sucks because they're inconsistent and release too much shit (but 75 percent of thier rehersal 3 inch cdr's are more worth a listen than anything by Zappa to these ears), well Zappa was like the original culperate of this. In fact, the only people influenced besides acid fried idiots are people who too believe that their perennial internal genius makes it justified to release every bodily function sound they can muster. Zappa was totally inconsistent, totally pretentious, and totally lame. He's like Patton; no talent at anything other than getting amazing backup bands (Fantomas=The Mothers of Invention).

I hate to conform to internet messageboard consensus, but ive never really loved old Franks work, but he doubtless treated his mum and his dog with the upmost respect etc.

Me no likey either.
I would likely listen to the solo work of Paul McCartney before I willingly took Zappa for a spin. Mind you, I have no love for McCartney...... lesser of two evils |

I was always a Lennon dude. I mean, McCartney has a handful I'll go for. But Lennon was far more interesting. |

My favorite Zappa is WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY. It's a great satire of hippy culture. But also it's great music.
Also, I really like SHIP ARRIVING TOO LATE TO SAVE A DROWNING WITCH, one of his 80's albums that makes great use of the synclavier. You MIGHT know this album as "the one that has 'Valley Girl'," but it's a really interesting record throughtout. Um. I dnt know. You might also try a Zappa comp, so that you can hear his different styles (rock, doo-wop, jazz, classical, etc), though I can't say either of the CHEAP THRILLS ones are that solid. Maybe STRICTLY COMMERCIAL? |
