I'm guessing maybe GG Allin. Not a band as such, but you know what I mean.

I guess a lot of this depends on how you define punk. Crass were in many ways the logical conclusion of a more political Clash version, whereas GG is more the ultimate Stooges style crash and burn version.

I have to confess that I've never actually heard any of Crass' stuff, at least not knowingly. I keep wanting to get something by them but never really know where to start.

Thanks, I'll check it out.
Have you read Ian Glasper's book about them? It's meant to be excellent as an account of the whole 80s anarcho-punk scene in Britain. |

I used to know a few people around the time who were deeply into the whole anarcho-punk-squat scene. To be honest, their humourless self-righteous did a good job of putting me off listening to stuff asspociated with it. It's only recently that I've felt any real desire to hear what I might've missed.

Yeah, I guess they were like a more political Hawkwind in that sense.

I didn't mean musically. I was thinking more about the fact that both bands came from the squat scene and extended that scene into a more communal, anti-establishmentist attitude towards making music. The main difference between the two probably had more to do with different attitudes to drugs than anything else.

In which case, it could be argued that Hawkwind are the most punk band ever. lol

I think Radioheads attempt to sabotage their commeercial career (Circa 1999-2002) deserves credit even it it had nothing to do with music
