Work related question. Student (British) was asking how US newspapers compared with our own - basically implying that they're no better (without appearing ever to have actually read one in her life). Not being American myself it was kind of impossible for me to say either way. So, I was wondering which US newspaper was generally thought to be the most reliable.

Reliable? In what way?

Myself, I like the New York Times when I can get it. I don't know if it's "reliable" but the writing is top drawer.

John Boy Walton published the Blue Ridge Chronicle. I'm sure that was reliable.

I'm guessing (and I stress guessing) the NY Times or the Washington Post, but from my little experience of reading them I seem to remember both having fairly substantial political axes to grind.

The best papers have been bought out by the same 4-5 media companies in the US...no wonder we can invade, occupy and kill 600,000 people without complaint.

The NY Times is probably the best regarded (and it is a joy to see everyday) but Chomsky has plenty to say about its biases, and of course served the
Bushies well in the runup to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The Wash Post used to be extremely well regarded, but has proven to be a shill for the Govt bureaucracy. The Boston Globe, LA Times and SF Chronicle used to all be decent papers.

I was so pleased by the plethora of papers in London last year. Even if some wear their politics in their banner, there is a variety of opinions, not just one view. London Times, the Observer and the Guardian are decent papers. In nYC we got shit, its so bad the Daily News and NY Post frequently have the same photo AND headline on the front page.

im a big fan of the washington post, if only because it was my hometown paper and i'm used to it-- still, it has its own biases. top coverage on dc/government stories.

the new york times is the standard against which all other papers are measured, though-- it's like the pope of american newspapers, ha ha ha.

for international news however, the christian science monitor (yes, that christian science) has excellent coverage. it's a one-of-a-kind paper, really, check it out online.

wall street journal is generally very good as well-- not sure now that it's owned by rupert murdoch. they've always been a conservative-leaning paper, but now??

i am not too sure of the american papers as i have not really read many. over here the best ones are the guardian and the independent, or at least the ones i read. i do get a tabloid sometimes for a laugh or if i just dont have time for anything because the guardian on a saturday takes about a week to read it has so many pullout sections.

It's what it's for, after all.

Never get your sources from here.

Especially when you know better and are temporarily flustered.

In the UK, most vaguely Left/Liberal types read The Guardian/Observer. The Telegraph tends to be very Conservative while The Times is just your typical Murdoch mouth-piece. Worst of them all though is The Mail, which always manages to take the most unreasonable stance on everything. If it could put an ultra-Right spin on the football results, I'm sure it would.

{edit] Oh and the London Evening Standard appears to have become little more than an Amy Winehouse fanzine of late
