I have always loved jukeboxes. I wish I owned one for my 45's. The CD jukes are cool too. I have finally gotten the hang of the digital internet capable jukeboxes that have proliferated these past 5 years or so
they have one at the bowling alley i go to and it rules to be able to spend two credits to download any sonic youth song or unwound song or polvo song (which are NEVER on jukeboxes) and play them! I played some unwound at the bowling alley and it was all loud and shit and after 2 minutes the alley manager skipped the song! it was too much for him! At one of the bars my friends go to they have one and I played all soprts of kick ass shit. I LOVE being abl;e to play my beloved sonic youth whereveer I want!!!!! and making others sit through it! that's the best! have any of you used these? the really opbscure stuff it does not have access to but you can play all the fugazi you want!

internet jukeboxes?
There is this one jukebox in this old diner with a ton of country, but it has CCR, Johnny Cash, and Patsy Cline, so I always pick some of that stuff. |

i always wanted to find a jukebox that had the bouncing souls "bullying the jukebox" on it so i could play it and then proceed to do the same...
Well i walked into the bar and i put in twenty bucks Because i know people's taste in music sucks About four hours had passed, forty picks, my empty glass. a tasty number all dressed in black tried to rock us with her wack attack There was no fuss we knew her game you look great but all your songs are lame Bullying the jukebox because it's fun! You can't get near it until we're done! Bullying the jukebox because we rule! All the songs we like are really cool! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp8tImU-NTs

my problem with downloadable is they cost a buck a tune-- you can buy the fucking mp3 for that price. so the ripoff factor annoys me a bit.
BUT there was this bar in dc called temperance hall, which you can see here: & it specializes in rye whiskey (awesome shots), and to the right of this picture there is a jukebox and it's pretty well loaded with shit like iggy, mingus, television, coltrane, etc. once there were these asswads putting in a load of shit music and i slipped my dollar & gave them a double whammy of marquee moon & goodbye porkpie hat, which are loooooong tunes & cut the flow of crap wonderfully. yeah i like jukeboxes, and i'll happily get ripped off by them when necessary. |

Hmmm...I wonder when we're going to get one of those here...
My wife's aunt has a juke box full of 45s. It has to "reset" every time you play a song on it, though, which is really fucking annoying since it will automatically go to Aerosmith or something. |

not if they are playing at a level which facilitates both live music and conversation, which is the proper format for a bar gig to begin with.

I assume it would also be hard to have a band playing all the time. So when a band isn't playing, the jukebox is.

well we don't have that "format" here. if a band plays... they put on a show. jukeboxes are awesome. and a lot of bands fucking suck. |

No places I visit have jukeboxes
Its either a band or a couple of people doing accoustic or caberet or whatev. Or if its canned stuff its played by the house dj and from the place you're in and the day it is, the style or type of music is pretty regular.. like saturdays at a bar I like is fucking gay electro.. where as wednesdays at the same bar is awesome jazz. hum. But then my city has a band to venue ratio of about 250:1... and we have a lot of venues. so there you go.

The ones I've used have been a rip, over a quid for one tune, screw that for a bag of chips.
