yes. very good band. i kinda like Giant Sand more, but they are two different beasts. Convertino is a great drummer, love watching him.
black light is a must have. hot rail and feast of wire are also way up there. their tour cds are typically worth getting too. wasn't too sold on the last two, though good songs exist on the recorsds. i'm gonna be seeing Joey and John wed night, opening for Neko. should be fun.

Hot Rail was one if my favourite records when it came out but I put it on recently and I thought it sucked. Listen and draw your own conclusions.

They're excellent. Seen them live last summer (o8) and they were one of the best of the fest.

I've got them pegged in the kind of post-rock that I have no interest.

Calexico; post rock?
buwahahahahahhaa anyway i always thought they were boring although there's excellent musicianship there. Listen to the first four Silver Jews insteald for some cool vintage feel minus the New Mexico flavour. |

I never went any further than listening to them on the radio. I wouldn't say I dislike them but I find them boring.
Greedrex - It isn't that strange for them to be lumped with Mogwai, Tortoise, Dirty Three etc. Once upon a time trend dictaded that post-rock was anything from Calexico to Long Finn Killie. |

wow
thats' quite far fetched . to me Neither Calexico nor LFK are post rock. The three other bands sure are 'pure" post-rock. whatever anyway, just joking. |

I don't see how Long Finn Killie are all that different from Mogwai, to be honest. Or Billy Mahonie for that matter. Or Gauge.

yeah, in the 90s any rock thing that sounded in any way new, tried out different song structures, or was instrumental, got called post rock

find the Peel Acres version of "Gilbert" if you wanna hear what Calexico is capable of, and doesn't fit neatly in any desert-noir pigeonhole...

This board needs more Billy Mahonie love. Having said that, I've not heard anything after their second LP, which is also fantastic.
Calexico, meanwhile, are a massive pile of meh. |

http://www.myspace.com/dilacuna Check these guys out, they sound like they might be right up your alley. I have a promo of their only EP which came out on Fat Cat a few years ago. I haven't listened to it in ages. They disappeared after that. |
