Y'know the old "can't judge a book (record) by its cover" cliche' ?
I, personally, have bought many albums based on covers in the past. Thrift store finds are generally chosen because of covers. Half-naked girl on an island? Must be exotica. Yoink! But ever NOT buy an album because of its cover? For instance, I never got YOU IN REVERSE because it didn't LOOK like a Built To Spill album cover to me. Even though it got really good reviews, the cover kept me away. Ever have a similar experience? |

Yes. Usually, I would take down the title and try to listen to some of it online, and if it was good I'd buy it. I can't think of any examples except for Apple O by Derhoof.

not that i know, but interesting thread. I think that slsk prevents me from this kind of questions cuz i only buy what i REALLY like (for sure as i can listen to the discs many times before buying them). This question would have benn even more relevant before the interwebz kicked the music industry in its sorry arse. On the contarry i bought most of BIGBLACK because of the nice covers even though, apart from songs about fucking i've never been an uberfan cuz the production is so dated and squeezed.

I bought my first Butthole Surfers casette (Rembrandt Pussyhorse) when I was 5 because I liked the name, I didn't like the music till I was about 10.

I bought Pussy Galore's "Groovy Hate F***" when I was eighteen months old because I liked the picture on the cover.

Oh, yeah, I also liked the font in which the band's name was written.

The crappy cover of the new Thurston cassette that some guy posted the other day wasn't my sole reason for deciding that I wouldn't buy it, but it certainly was a contributory factor.

I don't think I've ever let a bad cover stand in the way of me buying a record. I have wasted a lot of money in the past though, buying terrible albums simply because they had great covers. This, of course, was before the age of the interweb.

Honestly, I think I would be a lot more dissapointed if I were to buy records strictly on covers. I mean, I have in the passed and NOT been burned, but the opposite is equally true. Used records are no issue, as my local shop has plenty of listening stations as well as employees with varied tastes. But, yeah, new records, thats tough if you haven't heard of the group or are skeptical or lots of people are uber-hyping said album. Basically, and I find this true for a lot of people, it takes a real steamy pile of hand massaged goat turd of an album to warrant a return of a NEW lp. And even then most places don't return them, so you usually end up selling it for less than you paid for it. I'm considereing turning SY/ICP/Ab Baars ''In The fishtank'' into a bowl for my coffee table. Really its the worst Sy related output I've heard or owned. A true shame.
