It's like a different movie every time I watch it. I know I know Cruise is an alien-shagging nutcase, but he's PERFECT as the oblivious Dr. Bill!

It's not my #1 favorite Kubrick film, but that man never made a 100% bad movie in my eyes (heh).

Easily my least preferred Kubrick. I have a friend who gushes over this movie, calls it his favorite. I think he's insane. Even if I did think better of Eyes Wide Shut, no way is it even close to being in the same league as 2001, or Clockwork Orange, or FMJ, or Shining, or Paths of Glory.

other than featuring an Australian and supercult orgy, it's just "ok".

oddly, it's the only the only kubrick movie I own. I think I bought it so that I could masturbate to the above-mention Australian and supercult orgy.

yes. i read somewhere that he'd often cast inept male actors in roles that required it-- e.g. ryan o'neal as barry lyndon (which is an extraordinary movie). so the idiot cruise fits perfectly here as a clueless man-boy.

i liked EWS as a horror movie-- the ultrarich are way scarier than zombies

It has moments I find very funny :

- Tom Cruise meeting his dead patient's daughter's boyfriend who looks a lot like him...
- The hotel clerk, who seemed like a regular clerk, his hairy hands, his bracelets...

I like the settings and the lights, the atmosphere of that town...

But that whole orgy thing... is a bit phoney.

2001 - boring
Clockwork Orange & Shining - good, but too cartoonish characters
FMJ - half brilliant, half meh
haven't seen Paths of Glory

Eyes Wide Shut is easily my fav Kubrick film.

Eyes Wide Shut is easily my fav Kubrick film.

None of those movies were ruined by moronic performances from Cruise and Kidman either.

You really thought the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite sequence was boring? Alright. No, honestly, I guess I can understand that opinion of 2001, it is a very sterile and slow movie. But there's something mesmerizing about it. The Monolith, the depiction of space, the cinematography, I dunno, it's just great.

ebert & scorsese discuss eyes wide shut:

MARTIN: I think a lot of people were looking at "Eyes Wide Shut " from the wrong angle - it's not to be taken literally. It's Manhattan as you'd experience it in a dream, where everything feels familiar but very strange. And I think "Eyes Wide Shut" is a profound film about love, sex, and trust in a marriage, about learning to take things day by day, and either accepting or ignoring whatever unpleasant truths come along. It's also a film I cherish because it puts you in the authoritative hands of an old master, with a style that flies in the face of every modern convention.

ROGER: It does. And, you know, people put it up to this test of reality as if that means anything.

MARTIN: I know.

ROGER: I got e-mail from people saying, "Well, you could see that there was an English sign in the window of one of the stores," or "It wasn't really shot" or "There's no street in Manhattan that's that narrow or doesn't have any traffic." Of course there isn't. You know, I've got news for them, "Rear Window" wasn't shot in a real city either.

MARTIN: Exactly. Exactly.

ROGER: The whole point is that you elevate the material with your style into something special. Otherwise just go out and visit New York if that's what you want to see.

MARTIN: Exactly. Exactly. And there are all kinds of clues in the film as to that in a way, because you really take a journey inside Tom Cruise's mind in a way. And this wonderful sense of sexuality and guilt and unpleasant discoveries and the journey the marriage has to take, all building up to the last line, which is a beauty.

ROGER: Yes it is. Yeah, it's a great film.
