The more i think about it the less i think it is necessary to an extent. The proof is that music doesn't particularly seem to make an individual more well adjusted.Science could prove that and, please,no attacking me for this as i listen to tons of it.

We are all addicted to the feeling you get when you hear a good song or good band for the first time.

No, no need. Merely a desire.
'New'? The new is only personal, presumably. 'Thousands of parents are making their infants listen to classical' = good thing. Too many people without taste, for my liking.

i don't agree. It's of course very individual, but for example I constantly seek for new kinds of music and I love that crazy feeling when I fall for a previously unknown band, label or genre....it's like an addiction in some sense. my recent lover is Birchville Cat Motel. oh how tender.

I NNED to find new music, new books, new art, new intellectual experience. it si the one thing guaranteed to make me feel alive,. the feeling I get whne I hear a band or a song that I have not heard whether it is old or new, is indescribable. it is like a flodgate of understanding and love, like when I first heard POLVO about 10 years ago. or when I first heard Cornelius about 7 years ago. Or when i first read haruki murakami...
I am firmly in NEED of new music. It is my passion. the rush I get from falling in love with a song or a band is deep. it is long. it is powerful. sometimes it comes upon first liste, sometimes u[pon 3rd or 7th listen. I hated PHISh for several years. i was too "pun! punk!" to let myself enjoy it, but when I did it was as if a whole new sonic world opened up to me sonic youth taught me everything.

^ WORD!!
Exactly how I feel. The thing that keeps life interesting for me is knowing there's always something new to discover in art, music, literature... . There's so much out there, I can't possibly know it all before I die, but I'm going to make a good effort!

Hmmm....this is assuming that most people into music are open minded about it wich is rarely the case.

The new music I discover in most cases is stuff from before my time.

That can be okay, but I find too many young people digging almost entirely on bands that peaked before they were born, and it sells short all the great music happening right now, which young people can and should experience first-hand.
I can tell the story of meeting Kurt Cobain at the first show I ever drove myself to after I got my driver's license, and a crowd of young people will be in awe. But it's way more important that young people go have their own experiences. Go see a Pissed Jeans show or a Coughs show...and when you're in your 30's, tell young people about it and bank-roll your life on eBaying those limited spraypainted noise CDRs.

i sometimes feel very edgy and fucked and that makes me feel like not listening to music, which makes me feel worst; the best thing for me when i'm feeling bad is music, it makes it easier.

Interesting. I've become, in the last year or so, quite a fan of not sticking a record on and just enjoying quiet contemplation. For which read: My porn consumption has reached new highs.

Most Gonzo porn doesn't have soundtracks, and the overwhelming majority of porn is gonzo now.
I was being self-deprecating anyway. I do quite enjoy sitting in quietness rather than feel the overwhelming compulsion to stick another record on. One of the most dangerous things for me is records with locked grooves. Hours can be wasted on locked grooves.
