How do you say "I didn't like the music"
I forgot the past tense version of Like. |

Damn, its amazing what not speaking a language for 3-4 years will do to your knowledge. I took Spanish classes for 5 years throughout middle school and high school and got pretty decent and speaking and understanding. And now I can't remember shit. I wish I would have kept up with it.

no, no! avoid that-- machine translation is awful. i used to teach translation and you can always spot the crap that comes out of a computer brain. in fact, i still use machine translations for my own amusement-- you can get some of the most hilarious crap by inputting random strings of text. idioms seem to be the best at wreaking havoc with "artificial intelligence". -- ps: even with a simple sentence like the one posted here, the atrocious result is: "no tuve gusto de la música" WTF? tener gusto??? who speaks like that?? |

more hilarity:
chinga tu madre (fuck your mother) = chinga your mother cria cuervos y te sacaran los ojos (raise crows and they'll pluck out your eyes) = it raises crows and they removed the eyes to you me pica un huevo (my --left/right--ball itches /i got a ball itch) = it pricks an egg to me etc... |

hm, i tried some voltaire translations--
from candide-- Il y avait en Westphalie, dans le château de M. le baron de Thunder-ten-tronckh, un jeune garçon à qui la nature avait donné les moeurs les plus douces. = There was in Westphalia, in the castle of Mr. the baron de Thunder-ten-tronckh, a young boy to whom it natural had given the softest manners. ("it natural"? but it's comprehensible for the most part...) however when it comes to poetry it fucks up royally-- behold: Vous m'ordonnez de célébrer des saints : Ma voix est faible, et même un peu profane. Il faut pourtant vous chanter cette Jeanne Qui fit, dit-on, des prodiges divins. Elle affermit, de ses pucelles mains, Des fleurs de lys la tige gallicane, Sauva son roi de la rage anglicane, Et le fit oindre au maître-autel de Reims. You order to me to celebrate saints: My voice is weak, and even a little layman. You however should be sung this Jeanne Who made, says one, of the divine wonders. It strengthens, of its virgins hands, Flowers of lily the stem gallicane, Saved its king of the rage Anglican, And oindre with the high altar of Rheims did it. sounds like yoda, or nostradamus... but it conveys some ideas... |

Like English, there are always alternate ways to say things in French (or any other language for that matter.) My boyfriend and I both take French classes at different schools and he's learning a whole set of different phrases than I am for the same meanings.

oh yeah-- don't ever bring your teacher/TA a google translation though... nothing is better at handling language than a human brain... it's not just about the different expressions, but computers don't really "get" syntax....
