"Houston is a cruel, crazy town on a filthy river in East Texas with no zoning laws and a culture of sex, money and violence. It's a shabby, sprawling metropolis ruled by brazen women, crooked cops and super-rich pansexual cowboys who live by the code of the West -- which can mean just about anything you need it to mean, in a pinch."
Hunter S. Thompson

haha.. I especially dig how you reference Thompson as an all-caps acronym like the name of some kind of potent hard or synthetic drug. So do we free-base or slam Hunter Thompson's collective wisdom for the best dose?

I have lived her for 32 years. It is all true. Houston ahs more nudie bars than any other city in USA. More convenience stores than any city in USA. NO ZONING laws whatsoever. It is run by a good ol boy network, and indeed is full of brazen women. It is huge (599 square miles. To compare, Chicago is around 227 sq miles), sprawling, and homogeneous. You can move to a neighborhood 15 minutes away and effectively disappear.

Like LA without the glamour, and with cheaper drugs and a better freeway system.

Hahahaha.. I was going to just say the EXACT same thing. Y'all got all the gangs and drug violence too, plus you had an epic Championship B-ball team for just a second, and of course a decent music scene for a short while as well. Lets call y'all sub-LA East. But what would LA be without the vain, self-imploding glamour? Even bums got an individual style and fashion sense, and I know cold-blooded killers who are sometimes more concerned with their wardrobe then their blood feuds (look it is LA encapsulated in one image, a gold-digging hot chick with style, a savy mogul, a celebrity B-ball hero who also became a local real estate tycoon and a sincere LA community bulwark, and of course a low-life drug dealing gangster, hahahah its almost cliche but that picture is not contrived, it was a genuine and not-exactly staged LA moment) Thank Dr Jerry Buss rest his soul, he turned LA from a shit town into a global celebrity, even we ourselves are as self-absorbed in our self-reflective image as any other star-struck fucker from butt-fuck nowhere..

Both Houston and LA have very large Hispanic populations, very large Asian populations, massive suburbs, car-culture (Houston SLABs!) , gang culture, huge hip hop underground, etc.

One of the best rap albums of all time.. "rat-atat-tat to you ass hit the muthafuckin flow.." such epic cadence and vocal delivery, a true original yo! Again, like Hakeem the Dream for a brief moment in the mid-1990s Houston was putting rap on the map

At least a different flavor than what was coming out of NYC and LA.

as far as you know. NY state is so entrenched in the good ol boy system that the press would not even have a clue.
