I just saw Ran the other day & it blew my mind it's based on King Leary & I like it more than any other Kurosawa film I've seen yet. It's done in color but the acting & dialoge are superb. A must see for any fan!!! I total Samurai action something similar to Heaven & Earth. Will add more to this when I have more time.

Trust me 2 hours & 40 minutes of intense shit purely griping. I've seen Sanjuro, 7 Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Jojimbo, & Rashomon. All I have to say is this one has them all beat. I saw a documentry on Asian cinema & it talked about Ran & how it's one of his least known but one of his best & most influential works & I now believe it. You can see the influence in Hero as far as use of color is concerned. They are two totally different tales but as far as use of color all I have to say is that Ran is written all over Hero. Ran contains a serious plot & great imagery it captures the legacy of the samurai @ it's best. It features betrayal on many ends by different character & it also shows redemtion. Last film I saw that was protraying the samurai this appropriate was Heaven & Earth & if I'm not wrong it was the only movie done on 54 mm film so the shit this movie captures is amaizing, to say the the least. If you get a chance get your hands on both of these films & if you haven't seen Rashomon check that out as well.

I've only seen 7 Samurai and The Hidden Fortress out of your list, including Throne of blood, Rhapsody in August and two others I can't remember right now. Did ya know, that Lucas got many ideas from Seven Samurai for his Star Wars saga? The characters, costumes, backdrops, etc.
Gonna look for Ran. Thanks.

You are correct in saying that Hidden fortress gave Lucas ideas for C3P0 and R2D2, but not only. Scenes of samurai's going to battle with flags were used in for episode 1 too. Actually, Akira and George were both great admirers of John Ford's films.

If I'm not mistaken, you were still a wet dream when A new Hope (Episode IV) came out in 1977.
Sure it's a proper Star Wars. He made them all!

well if you are going for where ideas come from star wars is very similar to wagner's ring cycle down to the brother sister incest, although all the bad guys in the ring cycle don't speak like black people or asians
