I don't think you could go wrong. It has the same neck as the Squier Tele, and I love mine.
And as for project, I say throw a straight Strat single coil between them, put a Bigsby on and coiltap the humbucker and add a 5-way switch

You're better off just saving up to get a used fender from ebay. Squiers aren't really worth buying. I have a Squier strat that I inherited from someone and its pretty bad.

I had one. I didn't like the neck,,,the frets were sharp on the edges...guess I coulda done something about it, the pickups were okay...wouldn't stay in tune...a perfect cheap guitar to modify.

You could also just look on Craigslist for one of those First Act Volkswagen guitars that came with the car as a promo for a while. I have seen these listed multiple times by VW owners that don't play guitar for $75-125.

i love the squier strat I use presently and I haven't been able to find an american fender strat under a thousand bucks that feels and sounds worth the upgrade.

i got a squier as my first bass and now it just rests in the closet at my parents' house. i was thinking of selling it for iphone money, but i love the sentimentality of it.

My first instrument was a squier p bass, after the neck bowed out so many times, I stripped the truss rod bolt. High action forever after...managed to sell it for $100 though.

Inherited my brothers squier strat long ago and the pick-ups cheaped out. But the idea of a suped up vintage '51 sounds awesome. (b'_')b

thats what I am looking at it for. I honestly think that people spend shitloads of money on American fenders out of the image and price alone, rather then truly considering the actual quality of the instrument itself. further, it is to be a project guitar.

If George W. Bush owned a guitar, that would be it.
