I mean The Replacements were just nominated, yet no Sonic Youth? Do you think they'll ever get in?

They'll get in; Merzbow will do their introduction and the walls of the Waldorf will bleed rainbows.

Didn't we go over this last year? (And probably several years before that... I don't know. I'm a relative newb)
Sonic Youth DOES NOT belong in the Rest & Relaxation hall of fame. It's absurd to even suggest that they be measured, qualitatively, in the same manner as John Mellencamp and the fucking Eagles. Now I'm glad Nirvana is getting a nod. That absolutely had to happen, because Nirvana was a pop culture phenomenon, and the time has come to acknowledge them as the closest thing the 1990's had to the Beatles. They belong because their story is part of American history, not only from an underground, or pop perspective, but from ANY perspective. In a hundred years, Nirvana will be in university history books, right alongside OJ Simpson, Monica Lewinski, and Rodney King. As the Beatles are today. Sonic Youth is entirely different. I'm sure someday, when Justin Bieber becomes eligible and the association grunts and starts looking for some names to fill the list, Sy will make it, but hopefully we'll all be dead by then. There needs to be a counterculture "hall of fame." For Allen Ginsberg, Klaus Kinski, GG Allin, etc. Then there will be no reason not to include Sonic Youth in the first draft of the inaugural year. But do you really want Sonic Youth to be sitting between Red Hot Chili Peppers and Steely Dan in ducking Cleveland? Inducted by Eddie Vedder, (the guy who inducted U2) in his one public appearance of the year? Pish posh. |

The Replacements are not going to make it by the way.
Also, Sonic Youth was nominated once. I forget when, but they didn't make it. A bunch of fuckwads did instead. Actually, maybe they were just short listed or something. Point is, the rock and roll hall of fame is for squares. Nirvana' inevitable induction will be an anomaly, but a necessary one. |

Way the negativity of the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame... sure it 95% bunch of crap but here is one example: if the Velvet Underground have been inducted then Sonic Youth certainly has a place as well.

This is the corporate/mafia self congratulatory fetish event - this year's nominees include such rockers as hall and oates, chic and cat stevens. They finally got around to nominating KISS, one of the great all time rock n roll bands. Next year they'll nominate . That Simon and Garfuckingfunkel were inducted back in 1990 in the ROCKnROLL hall of fame before KISS tells you all you need to know about this bullshit. They'll probably get Robin Thicke up there to present this year, thats how rock bottom this event is.

It's that Jann Werner fucker from Rolling Stone. He and his cronies dictate who gets consideration, and they will always , ALWAYS, skew towards American acts. The Cure have been eligible for a decade. Black Sabbath took FOREVER to get in, and that is a fucking travesty. KISS should have gone in very early. for about a decade, rock n roll was synonymous with KISS, and in a good your-parents-hate-them kind of way, not like U2, who everyone's grandma and feeble grandpa loves.
The Sex Pistols sent in the best letter though, telling them all to fuck off.

I suppose that to be part of this you need to be the sort of band The Man feels safe in the knowledge that it will generate sales endlessly until we're all dead. Is Sonic Youth's back catalogue profitable enough for them to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

genteel gots the smarts. the old acts they put in are usually reserved for just before or after some big ass retrospective greatest hits box set comes out.

KISS would purposefully play gigs in tiny towns and small cities that the big rock "stars" would never be booked to. KISS would play to a 4000 amphitheater in Beaumont TX, or a fairground in Biloxi.
KISS may be a machine, but all those long-lasting dinosaur acts in the Hall of Fame were very much machines themselves.

That is priceless, we should enshrine this, the Steve Albini to Nirvana letter, and a transcription of Thurston's bogus capitalist youth-culture rant as some kind of "are you punk enough" manifesto. Oi Oi
