Is twat just a British word or do Americans use it too? I've never heard it on any American films, Tv, literature etc.

Sort of. It's not common, though. I know a couple people that say it, but I don't think I've seen it in a movie either. It goes with certain personalities, I guess. Sort of a non-serious insult in all the contexts I've heard it offline, something you'd say while laughing.

It's pretty wide spread in Britain. I guess it's a British word. It's pretty bad, on the level of cunt, it means the same.

Ya I don't think it's that bad here. I mean it's a cuss word, but not on the level of cunt or fuck. More like pussy, I think. But I don't know, you guys have a problem with "wanker" don't you? That's nothing here.

It's because it's a british word too. I guess you hear it and don't know the connotations or how bad it is because it's not part of your culture. It's like swearing in foreign language. It means nothing.

Ya, exactly. Cause you do hear stuff like "bullocks" or "bloody" or "wanker" here sometimes, but they're treated like "darn" or "shoot" cause they aren't associated with anything.

Yeah, for example on the simpsons the one with U2 at the end Bono says Wanker and it's always bleeped out over here but it seems in america like a passing word.

Theres another episode when Homer says wanker, I can't really remember, I think it was a piss take of British people. "Bollocks" an "bloody" aren't really that bad. Or at least not anymore. |

I could live without twats, but not without watts to power music for my ears.

I'm starting to hear people use "bloody" over here nowadays. I think the difference is, people in the US say it in a giggly sort of way whereas people in the UK say it more agressively. But, like lurker pointed out, a lot of Americans have this misconception that its a really rotten word in England.

I think it is considered far more vulgar in the USA than in the UK.
I personally don't use it. None too fond of the word "cunt" either. Both of these words are worse than "fuck" to me, vulgarity-wise, but if someone from the UK or Europe is using them, I knock them down a few notches in offensiveness because of cultural context. Stupid? Perhaps. |
