NewYorkers: NY events worth attending [24-28 august] ?

a very good friend will be in NY between 24-28 aug. and needs to find some cool shows/exhibitions/underground events that's be worth attending.
so please, NY people, give me some hints on whats hot in the Apple these days.
I'd be of great help for me and her.

=( i wont be back until sept 1, i dont know of any shows or anything going on. im out of the loop.

however i would highly recommend paying a visit to academy records, the address is 12 west 18th street (between 5th & 6th ave)
