Lately I've grown a great appreciation for strings in modern music (ie since the 1960s) and now I have a thirst to find more of them. I've always loved "eleanor rigby", "bittersweet symphony", "don't talk(put your head on my shoulder" and "car wash hair". I love the way some beautiful string arrangement can accentuate a song and send me to the heavens with its elegance.
I recently heard "moonlight mile" by the stones last night and realized I got to hear more of this kind of style. So everyone sound off on some music with strings. Don't reccomend classical music, thats not what i had in mind.

The Velvet Underground with Cale in really knew how to use strings. Venus in Furs is just the shit, or, for a lighter touch, Stephanie Says.

Belle and Sebastian. I don't have much of their stuff, but recall lots of strings. It can be a nice touch definitely. My fave song, Strawberry Fields, is prob one of the best examples too..

Alot of songs have strings in them, though I think I know what you are getting at, Bittersweet Symphony never gets old for me, Also worth checking out is Richards solo records, chock full of bombastic strings
Becks Paper Tiger and Lonesome Tears from Sea Change are stunning too http://www.myspace.com/attheendoftheworldband this new side project i've been working on with my mate has lots of string samples in it, you might dig it? |

You Took My Moonlight Away (a song by The Poppy Family)
I love pretty much everything by them, but this is the one song that immediately springs to mind when thinking of strings...... it has a very pretty string-filled outro. |
