Do people who always use 'LOL' really laughing out loud when they indicate so?

I see people use it in the most unusual places where it doesn't even make sense.

LOL should be changed to something like CMTM (chuckling mildly to myself) or TOASOMF (trace of a smile on my face) or SATIMNBEBMFE (somewhat amused though it may not be evident by my facial expression).

I find that "lol" makes people look really uneducated. A girl I partied with this past weekend messaged me:
