I saw them on the reunion tour. They seriously kick ass live.
Jon King is probably the greatest frontman ever. |

i don't dance in public, not even if i have had a few drinks
however.......with help of drinks, only two bands have ever made me dance spaztastically, ESG and Gang of Four, that is really high praise Dave Allen is one of the best bassists out there |

I love Gang Of Four. I regret not seeing them on the last tour.
Here's a couple of my videos of them live in 82: I Love A Man In Uniform http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z49cmltJJeA What We All Want http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OicBHKQxLAg |

Gotta check the Is It Love video!
I like some of the later slick glossy songs, like this. Classic 80's cheez video though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6l1RP9_ZrA |

I bought a compilation tape, which was my first exposure of them, in about 1996...I played it at work in the produce cooler and one of my co workers was quite shocked that I listened to 'this shit'.

The first live footage I ever saw of them was on a borrowed copy of Urgh! But it keeps getting deleted from sites because of copyrights . I need to get a torrent of urgh! |

I loved them as a freshman in high school. everyone else was listening to nofx and op ivy and rancid on the bus and I was listening to wire, gang of four.. mr. bungle. haha. that's what punk should be like.
that being said, i haven't really pulled out a gang of four album in years. they're actually quite boring, in retrospect. they have some good bass lines and some good lyrics and their guitarist is... interesting... but they're just a bit.... boring to me now (i don't know if i just realized they're boring or if i just played them to death; a little of a, a little of b?). I LOVE "solid gold", it's about 100 times better than entertainment!. and i also named my livejournal (hah) after a gang of four song... "white noise in a white room." so yeah. they've been influential to me a bit. like most bands, their ep's are probably better than their full lengths.. and their later albums are terrible. i'd still reccomend "solid gold", though, i got many plays out of that. "paralyzed" has to be one of the best songs ever. "dis hevi n givz me megrainz." |

When I saw them it was a bit dull. I mean, they did put on a great show but .... i don't know, i guess they are pricks.

heheh, that shit happens all the time. someone posts the same thing at the same time as me.
yeah, "solid gold" is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. i love the production on it; have never heard a record produced like that (except filter - short bus, but uh.. that's another story). how the fuck did they get the whole thing to sound so DARK? |

Good band. Great sing-a-long songs. I really love the simplistic guitar playing. Hearing the guitar and bass play off eachother in their songs is always awesome.
But, I bought a Gang Of Four tape from goodwill. It was some shitty one with a picture of a dog on the front. it waS TERRRIBLE |

I missed them at ATP last year. There was a queue, and I'd had enough of queueing. I wish I'd seen them though.

I think some of the songs on Solid Gold are their best but as an album Entertainment is probably better...like, Cheeseburger is kind of a cheesey song whereas Entertainment doesn't have any cheesey songs. And unlike the above poster I'm not the biggest fan of Paralyzed (although I think they did do a differently cool version on a Peel session once). I was looking at the song titles at this amazingly detailed discog! http://www.notgreatmen.com/gof_d.html |

Cheeseburger is a great song.
I'm on the wheels of the company truck! On the road, and all alone! As far as them being boring, *cough*AtSonicPark*cough* they seem to me to be a band that is better the louder they are. Those drumbeats get to you. I know how you feel about listening to Gang of Four when everyone else was listening to NOFX and that shit. All the punk kids were like "who's gang of four?" Ever notice the best 80's punk bands were the ones influenced by Gang of Four/Wire? |

I've never heard of the album Whore. Is that the one with the sucky MBV cover of Map Reference on it?

it is.
that's not too bad of a cover, though the godflesh, lee ranaldo, lush, fudge tunnel, etc. covers are greater! |
