Latest Visionaire to feature contributions from the Knife, Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance and others
August 28th, 2007 4:41 pm by Joel Michael CusumanoTri-annual art/culture/fashion “magazine” Visionaire is coming at you straight outta blogworld for its next release. Its 53rd issue, “Sound,” will be released this December and features contributions from, among others, David Byrne, the Knife, Animal Collective, Cat Power, Michael Stipe, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Antony and the Johnsons, Andrew WK, Yoko Ono, Adrock, Danger Mouse, Malcolm McLaren, Sunn O))) and Gang Gang Dance. The contributions will amount to over 100 minutes worth of previously unreleased audio (don’t count on all of these to be “songs”). The images on the picture discs have been designed by noteworthy record sleeve designers, including Peter Saville, Raymond Pettibon and Robert Longo. And talk about packaging: Only 4,000 numbered copies of “Sound” will be released, and the full package includes the five records, an acrylic dome case, a booklet and two CDs backing all of the audio content. No record player? Don’t fret, the package also includes a battery-operated toy truck that drives along the records’ grooves and plays the albums. Woah sweet. Can I hook it up to my iPhone? Visionaire 53, sponsored by British car manufacturer MINI, is dedicated to the theme of sound. The 34-page issue consists of five 12-inch vinyl records, each imprinted with images, or picture discs, that together contain more than 100 minutes of sound content-ranging from unreleased songs to spoken word pieces. Also included in the custom domed case is a MINI Clubman "Vinyl Killer" record player, a battery-operated toy car that features speakers and a needle. As the car moves along a record's groove, it plays each track, acting as a fully portable record player and sound system. The $250 issue comes packaged with two CDs with all of the sound content gathered digitally from such musicians as David Byrne, Courtney Love, Kim Gordon, Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran, and Cat Power's Chan Marshall; artists Robert Wilson, Yoko Ono, Doug Aitken, and Sylvie Fleury; deejays Trevor Jackson, Towa Tei, and Michel Gaubert; and designers Alexander McQueen and Helmut Lang. David Byrne sucks, the Knife sucks, Animal Collective is good, Cat Power is eh, Michael Stipe?! Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo are okay, no idea who Antony and the Johnsons are, Andrew WK is funny but makes shit music, Yoko Ono married John Lennon, Adrock sucks my fucking cock, Danger Mouse is lame, no idea who Malcolm McLaren is, Sunn O))) is great and probably only in this cuz they got an "art piece" somewhere... and Gang Gang Dance is one of the most overrated bands ever.
Sounds great, buying it today! |

I was briefly tempted to take out a four issue subscription to Visionaire in order to get this. Bidding for a copy of the current issue is currently at $500 on ebay, and I figured that if I sold that one and the other two issues that didn't feature Kim/Thurston/Lee on ebay, then I could get the one issue that I wanted pretty much for free.
But then I found out that the shipping charges for the four issues would be $825... |
