Ok, I was posting on another forum frequented by people who play jazz, classical and metal music, and I got asked how I'd describe the emotional range of noise music (stricly noise, no guitar noodlings, noise rock, drone and the like). I still haven't replied to the poster because I am not too sure of this myself, in fact I am not sure if when I listen to noise I feel anything at all. Anger? Frustration? Peace? Still stuck for an answer. Help me.

When we're talking about straght-on harsh japanoise (in the likes of Merzbow, Hijokaidan, Outermost, Incapacitants, K2, etc), the only emotion that comes to my mind is anger. That kind of anger that cleans you out.

To me the problem is that the genre covers far too many ranges of emotion. Metal is the only genre I can think of that primarily covers one emotion - aggression (and even then it can be anger or just excitement). Most genres cover several, Jazz being a great example.

Some noise is definitely about a release of anger type of aggression, but others are more the feelings of peace you mention (like some of the newest Skullflower for me, I find this stuff oddly relaxing!) Some causes fear in the listener, even noiseheads, but often I see noiseheads listening to stuff and it looks almost like they're getting off on it sexually. I've never really had that reaction to pure noise, but I probably don't qualify as a head either.

Why did I not think about it? A sexual feeling is definitely something that some noise creates. Brownie points to you.

Yeah the best sex kind of wipes out your brain the way the best noise does I suppose. Though the analogy doesn't always hold.

emotional range?

All noise conveys hatred and release to me.

straight up harsh noise doesn't convey any sort of emotion whatsoever to me. it feels rooted in nihilism more than anything else. occasionally, it seems to verge on release or some sort of interpersonal conflict set to performance and sound.

i've been searching for noise that's happy, while retaining the aggressive feeling.

It stranges because when I listen to music there is no emotion there unless it brings me back to a memory or something. But to me listening to noise is like listening to ambience music.

when i hear something that's blindingly oppressive and incredibly harsh and it's just blasting, i feel happiness and excitement. weird i know.

i'm not a temperamental listener, i don't go reach for certain albums when i feel a certain way (except for maybe like three records) so i'm not a good example, but there's noise for everything, i remember listening to like kevin drumm and feeling gloomed, then listening to masonna for aggressiveness or sutcliffe jügend for fun.

The other night I listened to my copy of "Untitled #89" by Francisco Lopez once again and it felt like outer space was talking to me. And yes, it's a noise record.

feel nothing; which could be described as nihilistic. wiping slate, like the sex analogy.
