I was wanting to go back to school for some music theory, but it would be my 3rd time back to college, and I'm just not so crazy about that. Anyways, my mom was telling me that you can just go in a sit through classes at no cost, you just don't get the tests and any interaction with the teachers, and so forth. Is this true? Can I basically go to college for free?

people will notice, and some people can be dicks. in california you can get a fee waiver most of the time, considering tuition in public colleges from the community college to the UC system are all against the law according the state constitution, so they give out a Board of Governors Fee Waiver.

I figured there might be a little more to it. The way I was told was that you just go in and sit down, everybody knows you aren't a student, but nobody cares. It seemed to easy.

I think it depends on the institution and class - at my huge freshman classes the prof had no idea who was there, but at my seminar classes you wouldn't get away with that.
Plus a lot of colleges (at least around NYC) have so much security now you can't even go in and visit old professors, never mind invade a class - at least at Lang it was that way. assholes give alumni nothing. Then they have the gall to send me letters looking for donations. |

Yeah, that would make sense. Maybe I'll just bite the bullet and just pay for school. I know, I know, my hippie mom will kill me for saying that...

My credit is so shot the only money they may give me is $5, just out of spite. But if I'm just going to take a few select courses instead of going for a degree, I may be able to afford it with little to no assitance.

No, I do not mean student loans, I mean Financial aid. What little help the Gov. can pay.

a you related to a hero of the Republic of Texas?
I've been told I could get a free ride there for this reason, but I've never given thought to trying to cash in. |

Here, they call it "auditing" classes, and you can do it if the professors approve.
Then it won't cost you anything but precious, finite youth. |

Yes. Talk to the professor though and make sure he or she is cool with it. Maybe offer to take the professor to dinner or something. You could even lie and say you are a student not in that class but you'd like to sit in. I'm sure policies vary from school to school, but most professors probably wouldn't give a fuck. Having a student that actually cares and isn't just there for the grade so they can have a good transcrip when they apply for jobs might actually please the instructor. |

sorry but many of you are talking ass.
as someone who's taught college-- i wouldn't let some random person from the street to sit in my class. you're not registered? fuck off. really. who would want the aggravation? now there may be some large lectures that you can attend, but not a small classroom. just the other day a friend of mine with an MA *registered* for a graduate class in her field and she was asked to leave unless she's admitted to the doctoral program. oh yes. anyway on the subject of large lectures, which are more or less public, berkeley has been putting their shit on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/user/ucberkeley it's mostly science though. kentucky might have something. not sure what. |

Yeah, someone sitting there and absorbing your lectures, not taking any tests and not getting any credit is a real burden. Certainly they will be guaranteed to be more of a burden than someone who pays money to do the exact same thing, but cause you more work by taking tests and calling you during your office hours and such. They're just SITTING THERE. I only see this as a problem if budget cuts have made you short on chairs. |
