big ups for convoluted minds. we owe them.

I'm Nobody! Who are you?
Are you – Nobody – too?
Then there's a pair of us?
Don't tell! they'd advertise – you know!

How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one's name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Bog!

Huh.
Guess I may have been in error about the virgin thing.
I'll do my homework next time I think about being flip about the death-anniversary of a depressing, ponderous poet.

I did a report on her a couple years ago. I have her complete collection of poems and recited one for school. What other poets are you all a fan of? Plath, Atwood, Crane, Roethke, etc. are some of my favorites.

ah... a favorite subject. among american poets i love whitman above all others; and of course st. dickinson; pound and tears eliot, though pound can be a bit abstruse; e.e. cummings (who in one if his diaries christened eliot "tears"); carlos williams; kenneth kock (whom i saw do a reading live, i have an autographed copy of "one train"); irish poets are many & good but i don't know enough, so i'll mention yeats again above everyone else and paul muldoon; among the english moderns, philip larkin is a funny nihilist, but auden surpasses all others i know, and before that there were keats and shelley and the luminous william blake (i am not a fan of wordsworth. i don't know why); i like the rhythm in tennyson and swinburne; and among the welsh of course there is that drunken butterfly known as dylan thomas, what a voice. latin americans-- that's my subject, but i'll start with the spanish predecessors: garcilaso, lope, quevedo, gongora; and then centuries later in latin america ruben dario, the supernova; marti, huidobro, vallejo, neruda, even the often-stiff borges; lezama lima; i do not like gabriela mistral; more recently alejandra pizarnik, rafael hinostroza, antonio cisneros; octavio paz can kiss my ass for the most part; and back to spain federico garcia lorca, juan ramon, antonio machado, miguel hernandez, some of cernuda & that wonderfully depraved person known as gil de biedma. of course i leave many out. we could start with the french: baudelaire of course, rimbaud, gautier, nerval, artaud-- i am not a fan of valery. whoever wrote la chanson de roland. and then there are the arab poets of the ancient kingdom of granada, whose names i dont remember but who wrote some gorgeous erotic poems. and germans like rilke, goethe, holderlin, and paul celan-- a pity i can't read them in the original. and the brazilians! carlos drummond the andrade i love best; the concretists were perhaps geniuses but their theory rarely reaches the gonads. and i could go on an on-- george seferis, odysseus elytis-- and homer!! fucking homer!! sappho, catullus, dante, lewis carroll, shakespeare (i am getting chaotic i know), etc, etc, etc...

Do you have any websites or links of any of them? I'd love to read new poetry. Of course, I'm family with cummings, eliot, etc but the foreign language poets I'd be interested in. If you could show me any I'd appreciate it alot.

oh yeah ,my pleasure!

some of these have been translated more or less. starting with neruda, alastair reid did some great work. i think when "il postino" came out, they reissued some anthologies. (if you haven't seen "il postino", do-- very funny). the borges translations if i recall are done by a guy named norman thomas di giovanni; they were friends & borges (a consummate reader of english) approved of the work. other people tried too-- latin american poetry was pretty popular in america during the 60's. robert bly has done some too. for vallejo, i believe clayton eshleman (sp?) has done the best translations-- but vallejo can be pretty hard in any language. many of these poets haven't been translate , to my knowledge. what i'd do is google the names & see what turns up. a lot of it you come across in anthologies & such. i used to regularly visit used books stores & fish around for gems.

some have been translated into english. once upon a time i helped with an anthology of world poetry that i think is no longer available (im googling) but i saw it a couple of years ago.

do you speak/read any other languages, and if so which ones? some times you can find bilingual editions, which are great. that's what i'll do for german poetry even though i don't understand a word, ha hah (some stuff can be figured out).

i could go on for hours! let me know what interests you most.

--
ps: this is the kind of google search im thinking of: jose gorostiza in english only
http://www.google.com/search?q=jose+gorostiza&hl=en&safe=off&client=fire fox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&lr=lang_en&sa=X&oi=lrtip9
(not that you'll find something-- but anyway i can help with specifics)

oh man. you must be in community college.

anyway, for those interested in getting started in a little latin-american poetry, i'd recommend an easy yet amazing one-- pablo neruda. sort of the latin american whitman. he wrote brilliantly & also wrote lots & lots of crap hah hah. but it was worth it.

this little book is a good place to start: decent edition, cheap, and bilingual to boot.
