I loved Trainspotting but for some reason I've never been able to summon the enthusiasm to read anything else he's done.

Correction: I did read The Acid house, which i thought was good but not anything like as good as Trainspotting.

Favorites are Trainspotting and Marabou Stork Nightmares.

I think the massive media attention he received (in the UK at least) after Trainspotting sort of put people off him for a bit. For a good year it seemed impossible to switch on the tv or the radio without hearing his name. He sort of ended up being bracketed with the likes of Damien Hirst as a kind of enfant terrible within the whole 'Cool Britannia' thing. I think it made a lot of people quite cynical about him, which is a shame because i do think Trainspotting is a great book.

I keep seeing 'Porno' whenever I'm in a book shop looking for something else (usually by Evelyn Waugh, hence my being in the 'W' section) and wondering whether to give it a go or not. I'll probably pick it up at the weekend. Thanks for the recommendation.

i liked trainspotting but have not read anything else by him.

incidentaly robert carlisle comes into my wifes work quite regularly with his family. i think he is filming here or something. i did a double take when i first saw him and all i could think of was begbie.

Porno's great, as is Glue. Maribou Stork Nightmares & Filth veered to much into plain nastiness to be enjoyable overall, but both had their moments. The Acid House & Ecstasy are nice, if lightweight. Bedroom Secrets is awful.

i loved the Trainspotting and Acid House movies, but i'd only read Trainspotting until i was held up at an airport a while back. they had Crime at the bookstore. it was different but very good. apparently he lives in Florida part of the year now, and the protagonist is a Scottish detective on vacation in Miami who gets drawn into a local case when he starts back on the hookers and blow routine... not as innovative as Trainspotting but very entertaining.

I had a Irvine Welsh thread a couple weeks back, or it became one when I posted about Ewan Mcgregor saying he wasn't too keen on the idea of reprising his role as Renton for a "Porno" movie. Anyways I'm heading towards the end of "Bedroom Secrets...." Its odd because its his most straight up prose fiction ever and oddly its not as good as some of the other books I've read of his. I for one really enjoyed "Porno" its been a hell of a long time since I read "Trainspotting" which was like reading a goddamn second language when I read it. Hated that he wrote the Scottish dialect not to mention constantly switching narrators. Now having read a number of his other novels I've grown used to it and its not as challenging for me. And I'm able to just enjoy the stories now. Outside of Trainspotting/Porno I really enjoyed "The Marabou Storke Nightmares". Haven't read his short stories. Isn't "Glue" short stories as well? Or is it a novel?

You should give Trainspotting another go at least. I too found the first couple of chapters pretty difficult to get into, mostly because of the phonetic way in which it's written and the obscure (for me anyway) slang used. It soon became pretty easy to work out though and after that spell at the beginning I really enjoyed it.

Of course, if you'd already got over the whole language thing and merely thought, 'well this is a load of boring crap' (which you're perfectly entitled to) then ignore everything I just said.

I was trying to think of some response along the lines of, 'ah, but trainspotting isn't really about junkies', but i just felt daft. Trainspotting is as much about junkies as Jaws is about a shark attacking a seaside resort: very. So yeah. if you're burnt out on junky-lit, then trainspotting is probably a book to be avoided. No question.
