Llik Your Idols DVD: Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, Richard Hell

March 7, 2009 9:20 p.m. by Jim Allen

Ah, downtown New York City circa 1980...the vacant tenement deathtraps, the hepatitis-ridden junkies, the scummy drug dealers...the sights and smells of the No Wave era underground. You'll get all this and more from Llik Your Idols, Angelique Bosio's documentary about the scene, set for DVD release on MVD Visual on May 19.

The film, whose title is obviously a play on Kill Your Idols, the 2004 film exploring the connection between the No Wave scene and the 21st century NYC post-punk revival, focuses on the intersection between the musicians and filmmakers who were intermingling both personally and artistically on the late-'70s/early-'80s New York underground, and includes interviews with Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, Richard Hell, and Jarboe of Swans fame, in addition to the likes of Nick Zedd, Joe Coleman, and Richard Kern

“Llik Your Idols: The Chaotic Story of Transgressive Cinema” coming to DVD

Published March 9, 2009 in News.

MVD Visual and Le Chat Qui Fume are pleased to announce the home viewing release of LLIK YOUR IDOLS for worldwide distribution on DVD May 19, 2009. The chaotic story of transgressive cinema told through excerpts, interviews, and performances by Richard Kern, Nick Zedd, Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Richard Hell, and others…
Directed and produced by Angelique Bosio, LLIK YOUR IDOLS is a 73-minute documentary that depicts the explosive underground New york scene of the eighties. It celebrates with cynicism the changes in that unique city under Reagan and Bush senior. Under the banners of Cinema of Transgression and No Wave (Sonic Youth, The Swans, Lydia Lunch, The Butthole Surfers, Foetus), a bunch of “insolent kids” (including Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch, Joe Coleman and Nick Zedd) briefly become the new anti-heroes of a generation. Scornful and flippant, their films and music violently attack conformity they see all around them, highlighting an erotically-charged and sardonic movement. LLIK YOUR IDOLS is a non-nostalgic examination of characters that have since become established artists.

When asked, “How much did LLIK YOUR IDOLS end up costing and how did you finance it?”, Bosio responds: “I’m not sure exactly how much it cost because it was a five-year-long thing. But I did finance it myself. Of course some people have helped me lending me equipment etc… What happened was I decided to go to NY in 2002 to do interviews. I kept on filming exhibitions, screenings, making of films and doing interviews whenever I had the opportunity. Meanwhile I was trying to convince French companies to produce the documentary but they systematically told me these people were not famous enough, and that the films were too violent and pornographic to sell it to a French TV channel. There has been two companies though, Cybride Production and ADN Factory, that tried to help me. But financially speaking, I was on my own. So I took a lousy job to finish it. It was a very low budget thing that caused me a lot of trouble! And a lot of fun too…”

This movie has be shown at festivals and theaters across the globe, including: Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Mu-Meson Archives (Sydney), Chicago Underground Film Festival, Seoul Film Festival, Erotica Film Fest (Los Angeles), Emmetrop Festival (Bourges), Oslo International Film Festival, Coney Island Film Festival, Melbourne Underground Film Festival, The Other Cinema (San Francisco), Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival, AS 220 (Providence), Seattle Grand Illusion Cinema, and many others…

“LLIK YOUR IDOLS captures the nihilistic spirit of that downbeat cinematic art movement known as the ‘Cinema of Transgression’ without stuffing it full of platitudes or faux delusional self-importance. It’s informative, well-researched and respectfully knows the terrain it dwells in. It finally puts a face to the original outsider cinematic artists that for years have had to hide in the proverbial shadows of their more well-known musical counterparts.” - Roger M. Mayer, Los Angeles Erotica Film Fest Director of Programming

It's pretty entertaining that following Sonic Youth ultimately leads one to transgressive art. The Yoof are quite the corrupters of souls. I love it. From the music video of "Sunday" to a video of a guy wanking, for some people.

Confusion is next and next after that is the truth.
