A woman with a lovely voice going through the catalogue. As heart-wrenchingly beautiful as you could want. |

A bossanova reading of Sweet and Tender Hooligan makes absolutely no artistic sense whatsoever.
An angelic choir singing "I'd rather not go/back to the old house," on the other hand, does. To each their own, of course, but you don't understand art. |

Morrisey sounds like kermit the fucking frog. Like he's always got a lump in his throat.

Good stuff. Smiths "Covers" usually are awful, because .. anyone trying to do a Morrisey impression is going to sound ridiculous, but putting your own voice over these songs will sound ridiculous too. Listen to Placebo's "Big Mouth Strikes Again" for a particularly embaeassing example. Also, At the Drive In covered a Smiths song and it sounds TERRIBLE.
on the other hand, the best Smiths cover I've ever heard is Mummy the Peepshow's "this Charming Man". They recorded it live and mostly managed to get the guitar line perfect (I know the original has like 11 guitar overdubs, but they played the main riff, which Marr also played live) -- AND SHE SANG THE SONG AT THE SAME TIME. I know for a fact this was recorded live, and they played the song live many times. It's a fun cover, pretty straightforward, will probably make most people laugh because of the broken english. But just hearing a fucking all girl Japanese noisey garage pop punk band doing a Smiths cover that was so dead-on really blew me away... seriously, lemme reiterate: PLAYING THAT TRICKY FUCKING GUITAR LINE -- SO MANY NOTES!!!!! -- AND SINGING AT THE SAME TIME. Pretty talented girl, that girl. |
