Roddick vs. Federer, that is, since Roger is the defending champion.

Roddick is playing the best tennis of his career, but Federer has an extra gear in him that he hasn't even had to go to in the tournament. Roddick served an ace the other night against Hewitt that was clocked at 148 mph! He served a few yesterday afternoon versus Youzhny at 139 & right on the lines. Jimmy Connors has been coaching him & this may be his best shot in this U.S. Open Men's Final to beat the best in the world, Roger Federer.

Can a player like Andy whose career has been plagued by disparity possibly win against Roger who is Mr. Consistency?

It seems possible, but not very probable. The two have played against each other eleven times & Roddick has won one match in all those meetings.

Federer clearly got in a bit of trouble against the other dominant American player, relative newcomer James Blake, in the quarter-final because the crowd in Flushing Meadows was so into rooting for their countryman & that may just play right into Roddick's hand in the match today.

Both players can return the big serve really well & will probably get a high percentage of first serves in-bounds.

2006 has been a marvelous year in tennis!

Disparity? That is another one of my vocab words. Damn they are popping up anywhere.

So Tennis? I saw some commercials for this. I saw Andy Roddick on SNL. One of my friends plays tennis on the school team. That is about all I can say that is related to this thread.

Thanks for the reply though.
I played on the high school team.

Damn, there's so much refinement here & such interest in great tennis here on the message board.

Sharapova & her big serve is dominating the women's game now. She won yesterday & will be on Letterman Monday night.

At the moment, Roddick lost the first set 6-2, but is up a break in the second 2-0.

---

Roddick took the second set 6-4 & lost a tiebreak in the third, narrowly missing his chance to turn the tide.
Federer won the fourth set & the match.

I played tennis for my high school the last two years, but I don't think I'll play this year. I like tennis and all, but I'm not really good - it was just something my friends and I decided to do. Some kids were really into it and I couldn't have cared less. I still play every once in a while.

I missed the Roddick-Federer match, but I figured Federer would have won. At least Roddick got a set. I did see Sharapova's match.

i didn't even realize the US open was on until i saw federer hit the winning point. d'oh.

at any rate, i played tennis in high school, for bar none THE worst team in my conference. i was MVP my sophomore year and never won a match in my entire high school career -- that's how bad we were. i would have been an OK #5 or #6 . . . but since we were so short on good players i played #1 or #2 for most of high school. haven't picked up a racquet in forever -- i really should. i liked it even though i sucked at it.

I thought Andy had a slight chance if he served well and accumulated a bunch of aces.....at least he's playing better now. Federer is just too good.

YES! a topic where i'd like to think i'm probably the ultimate authority on this forum. roddick's too much of a headcase and is one trick pony. he hits big serve, he hits big forehand. federer won't get blown away by his serve and is bound to break him a few times and rodick is going to VERY rarely break federer.

Federer's a smarter player, but it can go both ways.

Before the match, Tiger Woods & Roger Federer met for about twenty minutes. There's been a bit of a buzz in the sportsmedia lately since Woods has been such a force of dominance in his sport & reportedly, Tiger is an admirer of Federer's current reign in tennis.

On one of the points yesterday, Federer had Roddick chasing the ball really deep & Roddick almost ended up in Tiger Woods' lap.

During the sixth game of the third set (which was to decide who had the lead since they at that point each had a set apiece) there were six deuces. It was the longest game of the match & quite a dramatic one.

The French Open, Wimbledon, & The U.S. Open this year were all absolutely immensely entertaining sporting events.
In a rivalry that had begun last year, Federer and Rafael Nadal played each other in the final at Roland-Garros & Nadal won the clay court match.
Then, they also faced off at Wimbledon on grass & Federer won fairly decisively. It's very rare that the same two players end up in the championship at successive grand slam events, so that was great to see.
At the U.S. Open on the concrete hardcourt, tennis fans were hoping for a (very improbable) third contest, but it was not to be when Nadal was beaten by Youzny. But it all turned out to be high drama anyway with James Blake unsettling Federer a bit & Roddick really coming within only a few points from changing the complexion of the match & actually winning.
