Alright, a bunch of us have heard the Flywheel Gig were Thurston plays early versions of songs off of rather ripped, so I figured I'd post some interpretations of lyrics for some of the songs, starting with Do You Believe in Rapture? Now, I can't believe there're a couple words I'm not sure of because Thurston sings them pretty plainly and clearly, but still just a couple of single words are like, huh?, that could be three different things. Anywawy, here you go.
Do You Believe in Rapture Stand behind his drunken amp (imp?), Stand behind his light of love, Hear him yell his bloody tongue Hear him yell of blood and war Do you believe in his sweet sensation? Do you believe in a second chance? Do you believe in rapture, babe? A terrible hit strikes today A terrible head for the parade Burning eyes see Jesus coming Jesus comes to pave the way Do you believe in his sweet sensation? Do you believe in a second chance? Do you believe in rapture, babe? Can you tell me what to feel Open up your tender soul Can I drink your drunken mercy Wine burns the devil's home (hole? hope?) Do you believe in his sweet sensation? Do you believe in a second chance? Do you believe in rapture, babe? |

ugh, so many questions, but okay, lets answer them for thurston, you should too
Do You Believe in Rapture? well, i dont know, i guess, not decided on this one Do you believe in his sweet sensation? oh, yes i love the sweet sensations. Do you believe in a second chance? well, sometimes. if people can be given a second chance, they should be given a second chance. but god doesnt give a second chance in life i guess... if he does, then tomorrow i want to wake up in 1987. Do you believe in rapture, babe? hey, i already answered to that one, and stop calling me babe, cuz i am not a babe! Do you believe in his sweet sensation? already answered, thursty Do you believe in a second chance? already answered, thursty Do you believe in rapture, babe? i told you to stop calling me babe, you fuck! Can you tell me what to feel? hey dude, feel the feelings, just dont feel bad. Can I drink your drunken mercy? i am straight edge, so if i am not drunk, my mercy isn't either. Do you believe in his sweet sensation? dude, if you ask me those questions once again, i think i will... agh, nevermind, do you have amnesia? Do you believe in a second chance? do you have amnesia? Do you believe in rapture, babe? hey, babe, babe, i love you too!

It seems to be a mix. Do You Believe In Rapture sounds totally Murray Street / Sonic Nurse ish, and Incinerate (I think it was incinerate) takes a Daydream Nation style IMO. It's going to be hella' good. Can't wait |

ok, after hearing the excerpts from the interview i dont have any hope left that the album would sound like daydream nation, goo, or dirty... why dont they use the same distortions anymore as they did in that era, on newer albums they use mostly clean guitars, i miss the daydream, goo, dirty sound.... i think album will be a mixture of washing machine, muray, nurse thou

yeah that's basically what T said in that interview from last night although one could substitute "drunken" with "crack smokin'" (after all they bring it all in anyway) Thurston commented that Revelations was "insane" & an attempt to "settle the score". I wrote that song...I guess it was at a time when I was just really sort of amazed that there was so much policy being driven by officials who were basing it on...ah, this belief in rapture, this kind of...insane you know, Revelations... which is very similar to what I wrote before about how John of Patmos crafted it as some sort of big payoff revenge fantasy. Yeah, great minds think alike. Ultimately, according to the aesthetics of good art, the song is open-ended. This is one of the reasons why it's "rapture" & not "the Rapture". When I first heard they were changing the album title from "Sonic Life" to "Do You Believe in Rapture?" I pictured one of those fundamentalist church tracts as the cover. That would have been great. The "Rather Ripped" cover kind of looks like Art Brut, so I like it though. anyone hear about 2 of the highest ranking Homeland Security officials? one was busted for child pornography on his computer & one was arrested in a Miami (i believe) shopping mall for exposing himself to a 14-year old girl. I don't know about you, but it all sounds like some blasted-out, geeked-up antics to me. Remember Bill O'Reilly's unsolicited phone sex thing with his assistant? Same damn thing. I mean, talk about your hypocrites... hijack |
