I concentrate mainly on old rare books and the like, so I don't buy many new ones and am not really qualified to nominate the best, but I do have a favourite: in modern times, when local history books tend to be little more than a collection of photographs, it's always nice to read a well-researched history such as Bidston Observatory: The Place and the People by Joyce Scoffield.

I think I entirely failed to buy a book originally published in the last 200 years last year, let alone the year itself. There were some nice articles in the Guardian though, and Wire continues to entertain quite nicely.

i didn't read a book published later than 1930 in 2006.
i don't know why but i'm not really intune with contemporary novels/novelists. i did get a couple of poetry zines/reviews, big bridge was a good one...

I don't buy very many novels anymore. I'm interested in reading AE Van Voght's Voyage of the Space Beagle. But that's a very old book.
I guess I'll have to say Punk: the Whole Story (got it as a Xmas present)

I just mean the things Bunbury is reading or whatever. Are you referring to his/her comments in the pic thread? If so, I agree.

Yes, there was an article that didn't make me feel guilty for being a bit middle-class and white.

Pete off Big Brother's book.
(How many newly published books did I actually buy last year? Maybe five? Pete's book, Courtney's diaries, 'The God Delusion', 'Consider The Lobster', 'The Discomfort Zone'.. oh, and 'The Inheritance of Loss' (the 2006 Booker Prize winner. I always buy the winning book so I can judge it harshly and disagree with the judges decision.. without having read any of the other books on the shortlist.) Of those, yes, the ghost-written cash-in autobiography of a reality TV star gave me the most pleasure. |
