You might have heard the news already

Pitchfork is being folded into GQ magazine, and a lot of its staff got axed. That's a damn shame. Even though they rated one of SY's best albums with a ZERO, I would still regularly visit the site to read upon their latest reviews and news. Actually I don't really know why, because over half of the artists they mention I don't know and don't want to know. But sometimes they have interesting reads.

The site still seems to be active though, I don't see any articles on their site where they cover about the upcoming changes. So let's see what will happen.

Just wondering, what sites do you regularly visit for music news and reviews? Looks like I need a new one pretty soon. Preferably one that covers post-rock & doom metal as well as other types of (indie) rock.

lol pitchfork bye

what sites:

i used to have a subscription to the wire, but that old saying that writing about music is like dancing about economics (or something) is unfortunately true. i can't hear any music in the words, and the descriptions make no sense to me

but i loooooooved their samplers... do they still put out samplers? the wire tapper! that was the name: https://www.discogs.com/label/9575-Wire-Magazine

nice, they still put them out! i should pay more attention. should, could... would...

music samples is really all i need though. these days also the ai makes suggestions that might send me to places. or i might look here in the listening threads and give some things a try

the opinions of journos, i can live without. like that old man who hated stereolab? hahahha. a famous stupid fucker. music samples i always need though

eta: https://www.discogs.com/release/2849...Wire-Tapper-63

im reconstructing this playlist in software...

eta: surprise! some people have already done it with some issues so it's readiclickable

ps for metal i'd ask savage clone

I saw this. I feel bad for all the Pitchfork staffers who were laid off, but I’ve seen this kind of thing before in my own professional life and I’ve gotta say it sounds like Pitchfork was lagging in viewers/readers, and was probably making most of its money through festivals and commissions on third-party vendor sales.

There was a time when this website was pretty formative for me (like, 2001), but I haven’t given much of a shit in many years.

I've been without a reliable magazine for 20 years and sometimes i feel like I'm missing out on records I would love if only i had a decent magazine to inform me, but on the other hand i can't keep up with all the new and old music I would like to hear, so what are you going to do?

Similar for me. I have less time to keep up with new music like I used to. I normally always found a reliable source to take suggestions from, be it a zine, music mag or blog, but it's been harder in the past few years somehow. I make an effort to find out new or old bands/artists all the time, but it's normally thrown into a time frame that involves me being off work, the few hours I have left for myself, relationship duties and socialising. A few of the newer UK bands I find out about is because we go to gigs often to take photos. Especially in places like the George Tavern. Also, a string of bookmarks and trying to be pro-active about it. I also rely a lot on people I've been friends online for a while and normally seem to be located in the US. When it comes to pop music, my partner is mostly into it, so I get to listen to a lot of transgender peeps I have never heard of on a regular basis. And a lot of reality shows which I compromise on only because of love.

I don't remember the last time Pitchfork gave me a recommendation that I didn't already find from elsewhere

honestly the last 10 years have been more word of mouth, recommendations from Artitsts I already followed paying it forward allowing discovery other of others like Japanese Breakfast, Snail Mail, Lucy Dacus, Waxahatchee, Chastity Belt and so on and them paying it forward even further to find artists like Katy Kirby, Bully, Lala Lala, La Luz and so on

Whenever I've been on their site, it was because of all the hate it got on internet forums. But the writing is so dull, I never took it that seriously. Even sites like the Quietus have their fair share of boring writing when it comes to bands. And a lot of their writers I believe don't even get paid to write that way about music.

Never been a Pitchfork fan and they've sure committed their share of atrocities, but kudos to them for (at one point at least) being the ONLY major "publication" that thrashed The Rolling Stones' (whatever's left of 'em) unacceptable Hackney Diamonds.
