I heard the original mix of Raw Power today.

The one i'm talking about i've bought at least 2 years ago so it's not all that recent. It has liner notes by Iggy Pop himself and i don't think it's a bad mix either. |

I can't believe that the record was actually released like that.
There is no bass. On the original mix, there is just this low/mid hum going on all the time. You can't make out the bass or guitar or anything. It sounds like shit. It's still a killer record, though.

so which mix are you talking about? the original release had the bowie mix, but the iggy mix is way better, not sure if it was "original" or done later as iggy wasn't too happy with bowie's original mix. a bit confusing...

Just to cause confusion, there's a bootleg widely available (as in HMV sell it) called "Rough Power", which always used to be claimed to be the definitive version. I don't see how it could have been though, as the sound quality was abysmal.

the iggy mix was done specially for the c.d reissue, i used to have a tape of the original one but don't recall enough to do an informed comparison. Also I think i read somewhere that the lack of bass is a fundamental flaw in the recordings and unfixable in the mix. I really want to hear the original mixes again though and had a hunt around for it on vinyl but that shit is hard to find! I think iggys mix is a bit too loud on search and destroy i have to say but seriously, how good an album is it when it can be badly recorded, inconclusively mixed and still be one of the greatest albums ever!
