so, i've been using PC's since birth pretty much, but am thinking of switching over to Mac's. specifically thinking about getting a macbook.
has anyone else made this swap, and do you recommend it? is a mac a lot easier to work? |

After getting a little used to, Mac's easier and less annoying. They're great if you do design or music projects

I prefer macs. If you plan on getting the macbook, get the black one, because white ones suffer from premature discoloration.

Macs are an ingeniously engineered, integrated user experience. You know how PCs are a mish-mash of various programs and user interfaces? The Mac is one holistic graphical user nirvana, where everything speaks to each other in one language and one interface. In other words, once you get the hang of Mac, it's intuitive to the extreme.

I've always been a mac person, but it's really all about personal preferences.

this is the sonic youf board, where people suck at math and logic, so by default you're gonna hear a lot of unfounded mac hype.
but macs are great-- provided you are willing to pay a premium and stick to its limited choices of hardware and software. in other words, if all you do is basic office apps and media creation (making music, video, graphics, etc) the mac is all you'll need, and it will work great, for the most part. for people who don't understand computers the extra price of the mac is well worth the money and time savings in tech support . of course macs will break down (don't let anybody tell you otherwise), but you can pay for tech support as a form of insurance. other computer companies have similar deals but they are not marketed as effectively as "apple care" (it is easier to pay $300 for "3-year apple care" than for "offsite tech support", right?). me, i like to build and fix my own machines, and it's quite a joy. if you are into open source (free) apps, pc games, programming, system building, and experimenting with different operating systems, new hardware, and saving money in all of these, then the pc is for you. if you want to use a computer and not think of what's going on beneath the surface, then the mac will offer an advantage. i like macs, but i prefer pcs (so far, haven't tried vista yet) because when something goes wrong (and things go wrong with macs, believe me, i do my bit of video editing in FCP), it's easy to get under the hood in the pc, whereas macs are a bitch to fix. and i've been wanting to get a mac for some time, but the prices still leave me annoyed. however, i've been looking into running OSX on pc hardware. which for me would be sweet. because a mac these days (it runs on intel processors) is just a pc in chains. however-- as apple increases its market share, more and more open source alternatives to paid sofware are cropping up, reducing the price advantage of pcs. still, the hardware is overpriced, and not as easy to replace. anyway-- whatever you do please read up, get informed, test stuff, and find out what's the best option for you. |
