My Bob Dylan obsessed father and I checked it out tonight, and seeing as the consensus of the film is that its either self indulgent pretentious bullshit or brilliance, ill side with the latter. Cate Blanchett ties with Javier Bardem for performance of the year, shes just incredible. Anyways, theres really nothing i can say to do the film justice other than go see it. Ima go smoke cigs and play guitar good bye.

Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure about it - the multi-actors, 'Cate' Blachett playing a great man... I don't know. Heath Ledger was saying in an interview that his role as Dylan was not even an attempt to look like him, but merely tell a story.
... I'll see it on it's own merits, but I don't think I'll enjoy it as purely a portrait of Bob Dylans life. Don't know.

There's a two or three minute scene that I saw on You Tube. Blanchett, amazingly, really did look like mid-60s Dylan. This realism was shattered when David Cross as Allen Ginsberg pulls up beside Dylan's car for an exchange. It looked like Cross' fake beard was about to fall off. Cross, being a brilliant comedy actor, made his few lines shine. All of a sudden, I'm laughing like I'm watching a Mr Show sketch.
Since I only saw three minutes, taken out of context from the other hundred or so minutes in the film, I won't bother to offer an opinion, other than to say that it stikes me as one of those films that need to be viewed with an open mind more than once to be appriciated, if one wants to bother. I suspect that I will want to bother. |
