I live in Cincinnati and couldn't care less. When I think of all of the fine bands from this area that never got attention outside the area, their success makes me want to throw up. At least Wussy is starting to get some well deserved attention outside of Cincinnati.

I'm sorry to hear that. I feel the same way about some Seattle bands, though luckily, a lot of the successful ones are pretty good. But I have friends who've been writing, playing, recording and kicking ass for 15 years who still don't even have regional success.

When Macklemore wins Grammys and soundtracks Mariners games, but Susto Amore has to break up so they can eat and pay bills, that's fucked.

I'm digging In spades so far. Its early but so far I agree with you that its not quite as strong as Do To The Beast, but it has a more varied sound that was missing from that album.

Truthfully I'm having a hard time finding time to listen to anything but the new self titled Slowdive album. It is fantastic. As good as Souvlaki and is definitely my favorite album of the year so far. Sooooooo good.

I have not yet heard the new Slowdive. I guess it's the big legacy return album of the year. 2016's m b v. I haven't felt particularly compelled to check it out... never been big on Slowdive, always been more of a MBV/JAMC/Ride/Black Tambourine/Galaxie 500 kind of guy. But I'm not sure I've ever really understood them.

I will make a point to listen to the new album. From what I've read, it sounds a lot like... Slowdive. Sounds like it might be the Slowdiviest Slowdive album ever to be... slowly... dived. Not a particularly interesting prospect for me, but I'll give it a go.

Released a coupla days ago:

Joan Shelley's self-titled third (I believe) album. Produced by Jeff Tweedy. Usual suspects like James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg provide extra-wickedness. This is Joan's gig, though, mkay?

Bro you are so behind. That was like a month and a half ago. It's practically from 2010.

How do you feel about the year's only real across-the-board must hear album? By which I of course mean DAMN.

I've heard a few tracks from Damn now. They were good. I just haven't been in much of a hip hop mood right now.

I'm not in a hip-hop mood really myself, but DAMN. is just good music.

I'm not sure what kind of mood I'm in really. Most stuff sounds just totally bleh to me these days.

It's really only his fifth or sometning. You can't count the endless session singles and live singles and etc. and etc. as proper albums. Well, I guess you can, but... let's not.

It is pretty good. Sometimes it strikes me that there is pretty much nothing about his music that is challenging or extreme or even weird anymore. Like, I could probably play this album and The Best Day for my father and he wouldn't hate it. That's usually a sign that something's been normified, because my dad pretty much ONLY likes the Beatles, Steely Dan, Roy Orbison, Dylan and Frank Sinatra.

But other times I feel like the album has some nice buzzes and hisses. The middle point of "Cusp" comes to mind. Other parts make me think of the Velvet Underground. It's good for an artists whose best work is behind him. It's good in a general sense (better than any rock you'll likely hear on the radio). It's good, and I'm glad I bought it. But even in a quiet year, it's not Album of the year material.

(For reference, my father famously hated REM's "Leave" because it's "screechy." Why he continued to buy REM albums after they publically declared their intent to no longer sound like James Taylor, I'll never know. Also, the one time he actually accompanied me to a SY show -- sat waaaaaaay back and up in the bleachers and read the newspaper with his headphones on.)

new arca is cool I guess, like it's by a considerable distance his best record, but it's literally visionist's lp and a fucking heavy, verging on collapse dose of oversteps with vox and identity politix. none of his solo full lengths have done anything for me which is odd coming from someone who adored his early mixtapes and the stuff he does for others, think he's too beholden to balladic conventions in some way? like it's an interesting approach and this record is the closest he's come to cracking it but I just don't think it's there yet, sound palette instrumentally is way too dry and repetitive, and structurally very predictable.

Hmmmmm...

I do think that some of today's most daring artists are a little too bogged down with identity politicking for their own good (another example is ANOHNI — nothing against her, but it almost feels criminal to take such a unique and weird voice and to confine it to gender and political anthems. I would like to hear her venture into truly experimental territory on her next outing, assuming she remains ANOHNI. HOPELESSNESS was a really good record, but it's also the kind of thing you can only do once.

With Arca I'm less familiar with the visual aesthetic of the work. I like Arca becaue Arca seems to be carrying on in the bending of electronic genres and rules that my dearly beloved Aphex Twin did (and does) so goddamn well.

I remember liking the new Arca (haven't listened to it a ton) but I also remember feeling that it was a bit "ballad" heavy for an artist labeled "experimental." The tones and chopped melodies certainly do tend to run a bit heavy on the yearning and melancholy. I'm more interested in musical textures and variety, especially from electronic artists.

I'm going to listen to it again though so I can be sure we're even talking about the same thing.

Anyone remember Shackleton? No? Well he's been dropping some pretty cool music lately. His 2016 album Devotional Songs was really cool and his recent release Sferic Ghost Transmits is shaping up to be one of my favorite albums this year.

Also interesting is this Adult. track that Michael Gira is on for some reason. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCeVE26o67A

OK, so maybe I was exaggerating. A little. But that guy's made a lot of music.

Anyway, yeah, if I had any criticism it would be that Thurston plays things a bit safe.

New Housewives 7", a split with Massicote.

Quote:
Split 7” from Housewives (UK) and Massicot (Switzerland)

After sharing countless stages and touring together over the last two years, like minded noisemakers Housewives and Massicot put together two brand new songs for this limited edition split 7”.

Housewives track ‘Exc. 281016’ perfectly captures the mechanical repetition of their live sound with austere precision and jarring No Wave stutters; their regimented chaos is punctuated with throat shredding manipulated vocals brining to mind James Chance or the harsh repetition of Swans.

Massicots’ ‘Kokteilis’ shows off their ease at genre hopping between their recognisable Tropical No Wave and uncharacteristic hip hop beats whilst showcasing their perfect marriage of pop and noise. Monotone vocals merge with saccharine chants whilst sharp riffs mesh with oscillating percussion to create a perfect bewildering dance track.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Housewives - Exc. 281016
Massicot - Kokteilis

Format: 7” / 45 rpm
Pressing: 1000 copies
Length: 8 Mins / 2 Tracks

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vinyl package includes

- Reverse-board covers
- Spot varnish
- Download code

Artwork by Housewives own Joseph Rafferty

Collaboration between Blank Editions / Hands In The Dark Red Wig / Et Mon Cul C'est Du Tofu? and Harbinger Sound

http://blankeditions.bigcartel.com/p...sicott-split-7
