i thought this album would suck, but after a few listens i really really like it.
even thought its nothing new, the songs are much more interesting than the ones on trees outside... its a beautiful record imo. |

I've been listening to the record all week and I really like it. I think it's a bit more removed from the usual thurston sounds. Although somewhat comparable to TOTA I think this record has psych-folk written all over it.
At first the songs sounded a bit the same but after a while they distinguish themselves and reveal their true beauty. I also like the clean sound of the strings. Well done T. |

Does anyone have a link to the writing about the album that also includes the chord progressions...

...For the first time in ages I sat down with a glass of wine and listened to the record for the first time while poring over the sleeve and reading the lyrics... taking in the visuals etc and it was a really rich experience.
I think this album is the perfect paen to Bowie's 'Space Oddity' and I'm really enjoying it in that context. Quote:
By far my favourite track so far...

I got this yesterday and immediately feel happy, because there was so beautiful clear vinyls!
I just have listened it first time and I just love it! It´s so out of this world where everybody seem to have hurry and no time (and need) to be in the silence only with him/herself. I think this is definitely the best Thurston album. Maybe there is something same as in Trees Outside but to me it sounds as if there is twenty years between these albums instead of four. Demolished and 12 Strings are true accompanion, but Demolished is even more meditative. I have listened it just once, I could imagine what doors it will open to me in the future! |

Maybe I need to listen a few more times, but right now I'm not all that enthusiastic about this one.
Nice bonus track on itunes though. |

violin feels too heavy-handed/pronounced at parts, it mars the album for me.. otherwise it's pretty pleasant -- a definite improvement on trees. one thing i miss about latter-day thurston/sy is a lack of understated, amorphous/ambiguous elements to the music.. maybe i've just tired of the band (or their later material)
the reverbed-out harp sounds are real nice. |

I just checked out the timings for the 9 new numbers on bloody iTunes. So this is basically another 48-minute single album strewn out over 2 LPs / 4 sides for no logical reason...?

Wow. Really blown away by how good this record is. Wasn't even anticipating it at all, had forgotten it was out actually until a friend mentioned it. Felt completely indifferent though decided to check out the Guardian stream and was pleasantly surprised. So went out and bought the double LP.
First off, the packaging is lush as hell. I'm not a huge fan of the cover art but once you open out that gatefold and pull out the sleeves (and poetry booklet) . . . man, it is a feast. I feel like the double LP format works PERFECTLY for this album. A couple of tracks per side really allows you to absorb them better on initial listens as opposed to it all running together. This helps overcome the samey feel of some of the songs; what you start to appreciate is the nuances and subtleties of the music. The production is luscious, dude. This is the gentlest Thurston record I've ever heard. No distortion or noise, barely any dissonance at all. As someone noted it sometimes veers off into spacey psych-folk territory and it works really well! Thurston's vocal delivery and recording sound great. I like how the acoustic guitar is really at the forefront with the other instruments as a shimmering, drifting background. . . no propulsive drumming or obligatory soloing. I feel as if this is the record Thurston perhaps wanted to make with Trees Outside the Academy. So, yeh, great success. Totally blown me away, all the more so because I was fully expecting to be completely ambivalent towards it. Hell, tempted to jump on a cheap flight to London for the gig on Tuesday. |
