gotta agree with you here 100%! im not a kinda guy who likes to diss anything sy related (actually i dont like to diss anything on the internet), but this album is kinda hit n miss. It has its moments, but its mostly very conservative rock music. it lacks of energy and originality, while thurston on demolished thoughts, showed his musical visions from a whole different perspectiv |

I hate to say it but Pitchfork gave it a pretty solid review. A 5.8 though? Not a chance. It is a very solid album & while it isn't groundbreaking or beyond words amazing it is definitely a grower with A LOT of beautiful moments. Lee #2 should have let us all know what we were going to get. This is just good old rock n roll made by a great musician & songwriter. Perfect summer time record. Even though the lyrics are not typical Lee abstractions I think they fit in with the record even though I will admit sometimes they are a bit silly. I also have to say that if this weren't made by Lee I don't think I would have given it much of a chance but I am glad I did. This is going to be the perfect summer soundtrack for me. Thank you Lee, look forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

I´d like to know who you think can write an objective opionion about the music? a Robot? Because it´s always subjective with the music. And about that Pitchfork review, I think it is very poor way to start with Thurston`s and Kim`s divorce. (What it´s got to do with Lee´s music?) |

Fuck that Pitchfork review, and as a whole... fuck Pitchfork. I didn't even read it, I have nothing to do with that tripe those internet nerds paint all over someone's hard work. Lee's solo album is his first true "song" oriented outing and if you understood anything about Lee's tastes in music, the direction and sound, its clear to understand what the final product would sound like.

Are you just referring to the 3-chord guitar riff, or Lee's vocal? I've always been surprised by how many people ask if I'm playing R.E.M. when a "Lee song" comes on an SY record. "Karen Koltrane" in particular, numerous people have told me it sounds like Michael Stipe... Anyway, my local shop wins - they got BTTATT in on Friday and I probably played it three times that night. Some of the negative comments in this thread had me curious, but this record exceeds my expectations completely. He assembled a great group of musicians - you can rarely go wrong with Nels Cline's touch, Steve is naturally flawless, and I love hearing fluid, driving basslines behind these songs - the whole group mixes quite well! Pretty much every song had burned itself into my mind by the 2nd listen. I think it does a good job of blending his rock, pop, folk, and noise influences, and while it's hard to avoid occasionally sounding like Sonic Youth when you have half of the band playing, these songs cover a lot of musical territory. "Hammer Blows" is even stunning enough to satisfy my initial expectation that the album would be mostly acoustic, and the rest are pretty much high energy rock with a melodic slant or sick guitar fury (often in the same song). Oh, and every song is sung by Lee Ranaldo. What's not to like?

Yeah I remember talking to one of my buds about how Lees voice was so cool and unique. He said it kinda sounded like REM too. I had never even thought of that but I can kinda see it.

Waiting on a Dream from 0:18 on really reminds me of 1990 era REM. Low

Just got my cd today (LP coming tomorrow, yay!).
Laughed reading the sticker "The first rock album from..." Chewbacca + Nero d'Avola, super combination. Had no idea Cody helped with the graphic layout. Cody, make more tapes! I love the two I have. Will give it a proper listen soon.
