Gandalf, Superman and Madonna coming soon to British playgrounds
Britney, Tiger, Gandalf and Madonna will soon join the more usual Peters and Janes in Britain's playgrounds, while Harry Potter may also drop in, according to a new survey of babies' names. Other newly-fashionable choices include Snoop, after the US rap star, who may end up hanging out with Reebok and Adidas, said the survey of what parents are choosing to call their offspring. "It seems that many of us are happy to take hero worship to a whole new level, naming our children after the stars we admire," said Sarah Malone of the website which compiled the survey. "However, it would appear that the famous British sense of humour is alive and well, with six parents naming their son Gandalf, along with one Harry Potter and two Supermans," she added. Sport is a big supplier of names, with 1,191 little Tigers emulating the US golf star -- the top male namesake overall -- while there are three David Beckhams, 39 Gazzas, two Reeboks and three children named Adidas. Bizarrely, there are 26 Arsenals -- a mixture of boys and girls whose parents are presumably big fans of the north London football club. From the world of music, Australian star Kylie Minogue has inspired the biggest gaggle of little girls, with 7,261. In contrast, Madonna only manages 288 namesakes, easily beaten by 1,611 Britneys. Among actors Keanu Reaves has given birth to some 1,120 little nominal offspring, while Bob Geldof's daughter Peaches has also produced a reasonable crop of followers, as has Apple, of which there are two. |

Stone Age Twins Discovered Buried Under Mammoth's Shoulder Blade
BURIED TOGETHER: Researchers uncovered two burial sites in Austria that contain Stone Age newborns. At one site, two bodies that might be twins were buried together in red pigment. Researchers have unearthed the graves of three Stone Age infants that may ultimately bear on the question of whether humans interbred with Neandertals. The rare find, from a 27,000-year-old site in Austria, includes two bodies that might be twins sheltered under a mammoth's shoulder blade. The team discovered the skeletons in two separate burial pits: One uncovered last year contained two infants side by side--twins, apparently. A second pit containing a single body was found this year about a meter from the first pit. The twins had been protected from the elements by the mammoth bone and were very well preserved, says team member Christine Neugebauer-Maresch of the Prehistoric Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. An incisor from one of the pair indicates they died at nine or ten months of age, the group reports in the November 16 Nature. Before this, "there were no graves of newborns at all," Neugebauer-Maresch says. "We think if there are two preserved it's possible there are much more." My sources inform me that today,22 November, is the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music. So you're supposed to eat a lot whilst listening to music, or something.

Tanzanians quiet on witchcraft By Emmanuel Muga BBC Sport, Dar-es-Salaam Officials from Tanzania's top two (football) clubs are refusing to comment on their punishment for supposedly using witchcraft to influence the outcome of the country's domestic league. On Monday, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) concluded that newly-crowned champions Yanga and arch-rivals Simba had performed various witchcraft rituals before their derby on 29 October. The TFF imposed a fine of US$500 on both clubs. "The TFF Competitions Committee has decided to punish these teams because they showed unsporting behaviour and indulging in witchcraft," said a federation spokesperson. Investigative journalists from a national newspaper had published photographs showing fans of each team burying unknown substances in the pitch on the eve of the game. Other rituals found the players using the spectator's entrances before the game rather than the stadium's main gate - for fear of passing through an area they believe may have been tainted by witchcraft. The match was very important for both teams as Simba needed to win to keep their title hopes alive, while victory for Yanga would have secured them the title. The match ended goalless, but Yanga clinched the championship last week. This is the second time that these teams have been punished for using witchcraft as both received fines in 2003 after performing various rituals on football pitches. Beliefs in witchcraft are widespread in Tanzanian football and top teams hire witchdoctors for key matches. Witchdoctors also travel with teams for international matches.

^ Sorry to hear that. My head is fine, but I have a very slight pain in my right calf muscle.
I forgot something, so I'll have to pop to the shops again in a minute. With a sore leg.
