I really liked FOLLOW THE LEADER. In fact, it's tied with LIFE IS PEACHY as their best to me.

Adam, I think I asked you before, but how is the KoRn unplugged album? Was intriguing to me.

Oh, I never listened to that one. Haha.
The last one I listened to in its entirety was the one with "RIGHT NOWWWWWW" and their cover of "One" on it. Very good band. "Follow the Leader" has too many cameos but MUSICALLY it's their best album by far. Jesus.. DEAD BODIES EVERYWHERE might be one of my all time favorite songs. That and MY GIFT TO YOU. So amazing. |

More KoRn shit:
I really like KoRn because, to me, they are a really, really weird band. Maybe not so much now, but that early shit? Even from someone who is well-versed in underground musics, I find their stuff genuinely bizarre and have to question their mainstream appeal. For starters, they've never ROCKED. Some people have compared their guitar sound to Helmet -- but Helmet ROCKED. KoRn never "rock", even when they rock out it sounds too droney and ugly. Some of the riffs are just ridiculous... That one part in "Predictable" where he plays the lowest riff ever on the lowest string and THEN he hits a pitchshifter pedal which goes down 2 octaves and he plays the riff AGAIN?! It's ridiculous. Some of the sludgiest, droniest, weirdest riffing on their early stuff. Look at "Good God" and that riff.. so ridiculous. In the course of a second, they go from 0-1 on the lowest string to the 20th fret on the highest string. Then they do it again. It sounds easy to do but it's actually quite a bitch to play. Either way, who thinks of shit like that? Some of their guitar sounds are unbelievable, actually. I honestly think if they ditched the "nu-metal" one-string riffs and just focused on the weird-ass noises.. and maybe got a different vocalist.. even jaded SY fans would be into them. But, really, Jon is quite a unique and interesting vocalist. Between the scatting, weirdly melodic singing (that's very ugly), and crying breakdowns.. I mean, who the hell listens to this shit? Add in one of the best drummers EVER and.. uhm.. Fieldy.. and you have one interesting, weird-ass band. I don't really understand how they got popular. Most of their songs are just straight-up UGLY-sounding. I mean, at least with SlipKnot (another band who released lots of interesting and weird music), you had the "fuck the world!" teenager-in-his-bedroom-growling vibe. With KoRn... yeah, yeah, they have the "I'm-an-outsider-I-got-the-shit-kicked-out-of-me" lyrics, but then the OTHER half of their songs are about people molesting Jon! One of their best known songs, "Daddy", has a good 10 minutes of crying and screaming at the end. Add in the dirty, dirgey production and... yeah. Anyone know how exactly they were able to sell like 40 million records? Was it the bagpipe solos? Or the song called "KUNT!" which has the immortal lyric "fuck you titty sucking two balled bitch with a fat bruise clit"? |

I agree with everything you said. You summed up why I like them. And I never understood WHY the nu-metal crowd even really were into them. I felt like those listeners weren't hearing what I was.

Yeah, same goes for System of a Down, too. Who, admittingly, did soften up and change their sound up a bit, so I guess I can see why they eventually got popular. Because there was a good 2 years there, after self-titled came out, where no one gave a fuck about them. And that was when they were making their best music!
There actually are quite a few great nu metal bands.. or bands lumped into that genre. I don't consider them nu metal at all (though I don't know what to call them, as they aren't really punk either) but AMEN are one of my favorite bands of all time. |

System Of A Down is (1) way too complicated [like FZ] and (2) way too weird for mass consumption. And yet, they are/were super-popular. I mean seriously. They play super fucking human fast. They have insane tempo changes. They have lyrics that are WTFFFFF worthy. They are really, really good.

Nope. "Soil", "Suite-Pee", "Maramalde", "Cubert", "War?", "Darts", "PLUCK" are all just unbelievably amazing songs.

KoRn are a band I can't help but feel bad about liking sometimes. I mean, this is basically the catharsis of a man (Jonathan Davis) who was pretty much scarred for life as a child...
But really, they're over. They pretty much peaked with Issues and while Untouchables had some good songs, it also started the extremely overproduced sound they've had this whole decade. KoRn's music should sound claustrophoic and gritty, not huge and anthemic. When I heard Here To Stay, I started to feel the opposite would soon be true. Sure enough, they actually released Y'all Want A Single as a single, Head quit to become a Christian rocker, they do an unplugged album, and then Munky and Dave Silvera quit. The only thing keeping them KoRn is Jonathan Davis' voice and Fieldy's bass stylings. Talk about a zombie band...

The Fray are probably the most annoying band I have ever heard, boring music, and a shitty singer to top it off.
