Haino anecdote by Lasse Marhaug:

"I’ve seen Haino-san drive a whole stage-crew absolutely nuts because he went way over-time at a gig. At the end they went on stage and yelled to him while he was still playing, and then they cut the sound on the PA. It was in Paris and I was on the side of the stage. I filmed it all, if you search you can find it on my Vimeo. The link is: https://vimeo.com/31878907"

anyone else heard the new haino/fushitsusha record that came out with a recent book on his work (in french so can't understand it). disc is incredible, first a solo guitar piece then some of his final live recordings with yasushi ozawa (bass and guitar onslaught, versions of omae in there) and then the disc wraps up with this gorgeous looped vocal/drone piece which is just so so indescribably beautiful.

Fushitsusha is the best place to start with Haino, and their 2nd double live album and Pathetique are the best places to start with Fushitsusha

seriously just dive the fuck in, start with the fushitsusha double lives and then dive out from there -- leave watashi dake? for a little bit as that one is genuinely tough to listen to but so rewarding once you crack it. play around with the main fushitsusha lineup (kosugi & ozawa), the stuff with ikuro takahashi is incredible but so radically different to pretty much anything that registers as rock music. also maybe check out aihiyō (his bar band with takahashi and masami kawaguchi, partially sounds like flying nun meets the void). the soul's true love set on bleak bliss^^ is really great but also pretty difficult, payoff on the ethereal blues track at the end of the fushitsusha disc is so worth it though.

essentially just sample anything and everything that you can get your hands on. there's inevitably going to be stuff you'll hate so steer clear of the less palatable stuff first up (global ancient atmosphere comes to mind, know some people really hate the a capella and electronics stuff but I adore it), the way it pretty much works is if you listen to a couple of releases and can at least appreciate what he's trying to do then you'll eventually hear the right thing and it'll pretty much be the end of music for you.

o'malley is a fucking idiot and his voice drives me nuts (love his choons though) but this show has some really brilliant material in it:

https://www.redbullradio.com/shows/s...es/keiji-haino

all these records are great too
http://www.electronicbeats.net/oren-...y-keiji-haino/

and there was also a great primer in the wire at some stage in the last couple of years and I think red bull also ran a massive article on him which was shocking but also solid

Once you get thru some of the gtr works, the hurdy hurdy stuff and the vocals can be "interesting". For vocal hijinks, the best one I know of is the duets with KK Null on Mamoana, or thereabouts spelling wise. About the only Haino I really don't like are his percussion sets....oh, and if you can handle free jazz stylistics, his European sets in 2000 with Shoji Hano and Peter Brotzmann are pretty outstanding

there's been a considerable amount of bootlegs provided at dime a dozen and other sites. Haino is pro taping and sharing, but of course, one should own an equal amount of legit releases. Purple Trap is a pretty good one, too, though some of my favorite Haino stuff does reside on those boots, esp some 80's era solos/Fush gigs/shows with Ruins (aka Knead) and some shows with Chie Mukai. There's also some with T Moore and Jim O'R for those SY fans.

all upcoming haino shows are posted on here http://black.ap.teacup.com/fushitsusha/, gets updated pretty regularly.

they're playing new york as well around the same time. note it's a new lineup of fushitsusha that got together last year, it's haino and ryosuke kiyasu (who's been in the band since about 2013) with yasumune morishige being drafted in on bass after chiyo kamekawa left in like 2015 I think? hopefully this new group's going to get a record together soon, although wouldn't bank on it. shame there was never any recordings from the haino/tori kudo/ikuro takahashi lineup that was around for a couple of shows when they initially got back together. kiyasu though, mother of fucking christ, what a drummer.

also notable: these shows are happening around the release of a vinyl reissue of watashi dake? (!!!), first release on the black editions (largely a PSF reissues label) and coming out in about a month.

Man, i'd be interested to hear haino with chie mukai. Another good Fushitsusha starting point is the triple CD with Peter Brotzmann, probably a relatively easy release to get your hands on too

^that goes for like $150USD....also pretty intimidating for a fushitsusha intro hahaha, although once you're in that set has everything you could ever want. oddly pretty much all of the fushitsusha stuff is obscenely overpriced nowadays, in japan can be nabbed pretty cheaply (got the double lives for like $20 each) but overseas it's sooo expensive, as are the newer records as well. in fact even the tokuma stuff can be pretty expensive and 90% of the people who listen to fushitsusha tend to ignore the takahashi period....odd.

origin's hesitation is routinely the cheapest psf issue you're gonna find though.

And Origin's Hesitation is NOT a good place to start, it's where when you are looking to move beyond Haino's "accessable" material. It is one of the strangest records i have ever heard.

Just saw the Fush+Brotzmann price on discogs... crazy! I bought that for £20 two years ago!

yeah origin's hesitation intimidates me still, like ozawa's contribution is so, so minor on that, and as it sort of staggers on and you're left waiting 10 seconds for a mere drum hit....just really beguiling stuff. but I suppose in that respect it's pure haino, unadulterated intensity. even his solo percussive stuff doesn't have that much tension.

yeah it's obscene, although I do remember it selling out really quickly. the new disc with the book is already going for upwards of $70AUD though. just weird when you can pick up most psf titles in japan for literally nothing, but when it's got the haino name attached to it the price skyrockets.
