Two things I'm certain of: I sexually objectify. I'm not sexist.

That's not possible. Unless you have a very different notion of what "objectifying" means than the one used in gender studies. That's not possible (2). Everyone's sexist, in different degrees. tr.v. ob·jec·ti·fied, ob·jec·ti·fy·ing, ob·jec·ti·fies 1. To present or regard as an object: "Because we have objectified animals, we are able to treat them impersonally" (Barry Lopez). To objectify is to dehumanize. Dehumanization often ignores the target's individuality (i.e., the creative and interesting aspects of his or her personality) and prevents one from showing compassion towards stigmatized groups.

To treat/view a living being object, deprived of individuality, personality and will, not quite equal to you but as something to exist to satisfy your needs. To objectify is pretty much the core of all sexism (and racism, slavery, classism etc.)
People often confuse objetification with sexual attraction because they are portrayed as the same thing in our culture, but that's a misconception. These things are not mutually exclusive.

what's it called when people keep using the accusation of straw man fallacy to avoid the real discussion? that must be a term for that one. there's also a term for that fallacy when you try to accuse the person saying something (crazy, aggressive, exaggerated, alcoholic etc.) rather than adressing the real subject of the discussion... what is it again? or when they try to divert attention to something else instead of commenting on data and facts that have been posed.

the only thing i've been talking about since i posted in this thread is that you suck at persuading your intended audience. i said that instead of educating people you alienate them and trying to blame them for it hides the fact that you suck at what you claim you're trying to do. it's like a shitty musician who cries about the public's lack of good taste. really, you're terrible at it, don't blame the people who "don't listen." |

You think i'm some sort of lecturer who's supposed to play a mother theresa before assholes attacking me? seriously, you've already been there and i already said this to you: i don't give a shit what you think, you're a sexist, offensive jerk because you choose to, because you keep making excuses about it, not because some woman isn't capable of "educating" you correctly. once again: i have no obligation to be nice to people who aren't nice to me. This whole "be a nice girl hoping that someday we might want to cooperate" doesn't work anymore, try something new.

Of course I'm not saying that, it's hard to say where it begins and where it ends. But I wasn't brought up to divide a man into pieces and parts, I wasn't taught to view them as objects for my pleasure, I didn't grow up seeing objectified images of men in every corner of the city. I wasn't taught that it's ok to think of them as less than human, but to view them as a whole, human being. Personally, I can't even be attracted to someone I don't know based on their looks. I've been told that most men find that almost impossible to believe, and I can understand why. Women are exposed to very different messages in that sense. On the other hand, I was taught to view the female body in an cruel, analytical way and objectify every bit of it, even in myself.

i said woman not women. it's kind of annoying when people have to misinterpret what you say in order to keep being a pain in the ass. i don't represent feminism as a whole. therefore i speak about it whichever way I WANT and you have no say about it. you keep talking about HOW i'm saying something in order to avoid WHAT I'm saying - isn't there a fallacy for that too? oh well, i must be doing something that really bothers you because you just won't leave me alone.
