there is an interesting article in today's financial times that compares biden to keir starmer and praises the value of "boring" candidates who appeal to those who are not obsessed with politics.

there are references to josé mourinho, no drama obama vs "maverick" mccain (article doesnt use the word maverick but i remember queen wasilla calling mccain that), and various other presidents and prime ministers throughout history.

there is also embedded in it a comparative theory of the electorate in the usa/uk (and the media as well).

it's a good piece actually, whether one agrees with it or not...

re: woke: i no longer know wtf it means. it used to mean something, then it became a performative social media thing devoid of much meaning, and now it's apparently an insult for some? less discrimination of course would be great, and there are social structures of oppression that must be changed of course, but i don't think maoism will free us from them.

and yes, the usa used to be a center-right country (i place sorta center-left here), but a lot of the population is now flirting with outright fascism. i am just a "liberal" which now apparently means commie in fox news parlance. but no, i'm a liberal, really. very passé, i know, but that's where i am, roughly, that's my home, broadly speaking, in the philosophical sense, not the popular label sense.

In Canada, on Sep 10, Pierre Fucking Freedom Pollievre will be elected the leader of The Cons. Many so-called experts here say that this means The Cons will lose the next election. I'm not so sure. We often appear to be pretty smug in Canada, and we think MAGAism can't happen here. But I see MAGAism all around me.

I generally think of "woke" as being aware that the United States is built on a cemetery full of racist and misogynistic skeletons, among other variations. The "woke" people want to atone and rebuild and create a stronger more humanistic and inclusive foundation. The people complaining about "wokeness" think everything is just fine and nothing should be changed. The act of rebuilding better is an attack at their livelihood.
