algeria is playing a nice game-- lacking power in the shots to the goal but playing better. still, we'll see if they have enough wind for the 2nd half. if they wanna score better do it now.

We're abysmal so far. Seriously bad. That's no better than the French performance last night - and at least France had the excuse that Mexico aren't a bad team. Algeria aren't anything remotely special and England are actually making them look decent. We played better againsdt the USA, and they're miles better than Algeria. England only look remotely decent when Gerrard and Rooney are connecting up but Gerrard's isolated on the left. This is just depressing.
PLEASE put Joe Cole on. |

Wright-Phillips for Lennon?!?!?!
It's just gonna be more of the same. Move Gerrard behind Rooney, bring Joe Cole on, get Heskey off. FFS! |

FINISHED!
this is great for USA, because they stand right next to england in both points and goal difference BUT we've scored more goals, so if it comes down to that very fine line, we're ahead. that's of course provided we can beat algeria. we have 2 points, they have 1, they need to play to win. slovenia has to defend the lead, they've got 4 points but they could risk the 1st place or even they could risk going out if they don't win-- again by goal difference. it's all very confusing but basically still all up in the air with anybody still able to place 1st-- except for algeria, cuz even if they won, no matter who wins or ties in england/slovenia someone is getting at least 5 points. |

when we stand next to england, we should smile, so that they know who's boss and who has the better teeth.

If USA and England draw their next matches, it'll come down to goal difference as to who goes through in second place. USA have the advantage because of their better goals scored. If USA and England both win, they both qualify and first and second place will come down to goal difference. If USA and England both lose, Algeria goes through in second. The second placed team is likely to face the winner of group D in the 4th round (probably Germany); 1st place will probably face Group D's second placed team (probably either Ghana or Serbia). ... I think. |

I watched the England vs Algeria game in the pub with some friends. The place exploded after the game. The bouncers had a busy night tonight. I couldn't leave as a group of drunken thugs were kicking off outside the pub. Punches were thrown between the drunken thugs and the bouncers which resulted in the bouncers backing into the pub and locking the entrance doors! Eventually a police van arrived with coppers throwing several of the drunken thugs into the back of it. The pouring rain kind of added an apt ambience to the whole shebang.

after watching tonight's game i'm inclined to think it will be Slovenia and the USA that will progress to the next stage.

I still think England should be able to make it to the next round, solely based on the players they have, but it's not getting any easier from here. They MUST win their last game now, plus after Ferdinand and King they won't have Carragher either at centre back.
England looked so lifeless today, as if they didn't really want to be there. I really have the impression that there's something fundamentally wrong in the squad. Bad atmosphere, discontent, Terry fucking someone's wife, something like that.... read all about it in The Sun and News of the World next week! |

Predictably, the UK media are going mental about it. Not without good reason, really. Drawing against a lesser side is one thing (it happens) but you're right, they were completely lifeless. Capello refuses to let Gerrard play behind Rooney while appearing to not want Joe Cole anywhere near the pitch, despite the fact that A) he chose him for the squad and B) he's probably England's most creative player. Right now, Maradona seems to have a better grip on reality than Capello appears to. Something radical is gonna have to change if they want to beat Slovenia, and even if they do qualify out of the group stage, I can't see them getting any further than the first knockout stage. One thing's for sure though, if the don't qualify (and I really think that's a distinct possibility now) Capello and the team will be absolutely crucified once they get back to the UK. EDIT: That youtube thing is classic. Rooney's getting slaughtered by the media for that too. |
