To be honest, Adam I havent' seen much of his work. I saw the MOH episode. Hated it. I saw some of Ichi and Audition. Hated.
I dont know why, but (to be honest and I dont care if it makes me sound like a wuss) his work tends to really bother me. I mean, 90% of what I watch is horror. That's how I roll. But the few films of his I've seen just really freak me out. Like BLOODSUCKING FREAKS is one of my favorite movies. And it's totally sadistic, but also it's hard to take it seriously, or be scared by Sardu and Ralphus. I don't know. But the claymation one sounds really awesome actually. |

Well, as I said, I definitely don't like Audition or the MOH episode. Ichi's pretty good I guess. I'm just saying that all of his work is completely different. That's one reason I respect him. I'm a fan of his but even I am not going to pretend he's that great of a director.
I tend to prefer his more subdued, subtle works like Dead or Alive 2 and some of his other Yakuza films because they have a very quiet, childlike innocence with bursts of violence. Though really the main reason I like them is because they remind me of Takeshi Kitano. I'd definitely check out HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS and VISITOR Q, which is hilarious... almost in a Bloodsucking-Freaks-kind-of-way at times in its absurdity! |

It's a sweet, funny family movie.
There's sex with a corpse and a mom who lactates so much it fills up a kitchen and little kids stabbed with knives. But it's all FUNNY. You wouldn't think so, but it's totally played for laughs! It's really great. I watched Kikujiro the other day, and it's totally a family film in every way... but there's still a child molestor in it! Just for laughs! Japanese has a much more open and tolerable and understanding culture than we do I guess. Hmph. |

There's Something About Mary.
Believe it or not, I'd never seen it before. I think it's very good.
