i'm curious about the book. not sure if i'll ever read it. but my understanding was the tv characters were inspired by the book, and the cases the first couple of seasons came out of that. then again i havent actually read it hahaha

what i really enjoy is the prelude to the wire. i can see where david simon made his bones. for me, he had appeared out of nowhere like a comet in the sky. but as it turned out, he had a history

of all his prequels i had only seen "the corner" but that was more documentary than anything (with actors "reconstructing" real situations). not great drama, just sad business, so kinda meh in recollection. "informative" i guess

Aside from the Wire and Homicide the only other thing of his I've seen is Generation Kill, which was also great. As far as I'm concerned The Wire is the bench mark against which all other 21stC TV is judged, so... I don't end up watching that much TV.
I'd recommend the book, there's a lot more to it than being the basis for the TV show, I gave up trying to work out who was based on who, because it's not clear. IIRC at the end of the book there's an added afterword where he goes in to how the TV show grew out of the book.

What I love about that show is that literally everyone is fucking insufferable, and nearly every interaction is deeply uncomfortable to watch, but it still manages to be pretty cozy viewing.
