Here is a great example of the more confusing aspects:

the word Mata has two distinct meanings depending on if one properly glotalizes the "t" sound, and depending on regional dialects, many Amharic speakers do NOT glotalize as harshly as others..

(mata) መታ ~ hit

So if someone says, "Zare yemetah." it can mean either "today he came here" or "today he got punched"..

Want to get even more confused?

"Zare mata yemetah" could mean either "tonight he is coming" or "tonight he is getting punched" or "tonight will you punch him?" depending on exactly how the "t" sound in "meta" is pronounced

That exact same expression could also be a question, "Is he coming tonight?" or "Is he getting punched tonight?" or "Tonight will you punch him?" if there is "uptalk" at the "yemetah"...

No if you READ all these the difference is totally obvious (because of the 256 letter alphabet things are very very precise) but if you are listening? Need to be a very fluent speaker..

Oh my Lord, you don't even want to now how ritualistically complex sarcasm, being facetious, or ridicule is. Indeed, there is a very very complex literary art form called "Wax and Gold" which is built on the concept of hidden meanings and double entendre where the hidden or "gold" meaning of a poem is obviously discernible only when read but the art form is being able to figure it out strictly by listening and thinking about the word play..

that reminds me of a close friend my grandma had years and years ago (i was a small kid) who would come over, and had this cockney accent and still used the rhyming slang some 30-40 years after emigrating to the states. i was enchanted by it because it was like a secret code to me, and she was this small old lady talking about going up the apples and stuff.

eh, if it's any consolation i believe you didn't kill him. it's not your fault.

and it doesn't sound like you were trying to be a dick to him--it's more like you were trying to help him and it backfired because of narcissism. you attacked his ideas not him-- people get too narcissistically attached to their ideas and when the world proves them wrong they can't fucking handle it. their fault. you're exonerated of all crimes. case closed.
