look, after years of waiting for a new SY album at the time it came out, murray street was nice to listen to. SY is my favorite all timne musical group of any genre and I love them passionately, but I have listened to murray street maybe 50 times and MAN IT IS A SNOOZER!@ Not that it sucks, or the songs ar bad, but the whole mood of the disc is like thurston saying, "take a nap coco, take a nap. you need to sleep now. it is past yr bedtime..." and it makes me sleep I tells ya!
any song off of murray would be great on a SY mix but the whole album at once is sleepy time to baby girl type shit. like thurston moore's cock got soft and he wrote an anemic record.

Yeah... I really didnt' know the band much at all when this happened, I just knew that they were supposedly pretty awesome and I was gonna be stuck at my grandparent's house that night unless I found something else to do, so I made a botched attempt to go to this show. What a way to be introduced to the band though. I was around... 14 at the time.

Four tracks really stand out for me:
Jams Run Free Lights Out Pink Steam Or The rest of the songs are fine, but those four make it a great album I think. Still, Rather Ripped is one of my least favorites by Sonic Youth, but I do like it. |

that is a terrible comparison. In Rainbows is a much better album than you are giving it credit for. Rather Ripped is a decent album, it was a fantastic tour, and I had a fucking excellent time at those shows, but I do not think it had the same level of seriousness that Radiohead gave the In Rainbows material over the years it took them to put it out.

i didnt meant that.
its a fucking good album. but it could have been better. i mean, radiohead were looking for a different sound, a different approach to their music which ended up being something quite different from what i like about them.

haha... well yr actually right when you say that radiohead did a really hard work to get 'in rainbows' to sound like it sounds. and im sure its been a pain in the ass for tho/em.. (you can notice by reading Dead Air Space posts during the process of its creation..heh)
it's just that its not the side of them that i like. same with sonic youth. but theyre both fucking good albums indeed

I enjoy it a lot. I didn't even know so many SY fans hated it until I joined here.

this board actually is slanted towards sonic snobbery, they hate collectively on a lot of things. that is why it is called Sonic Youth Gossip. Most of them don't like anything since 1995, and wish sonic youth had never progressed or evolved out of the early 90s era. But I can't talk, approx 63% of the music in my collection was performed or recorded before 1979..

i enjoy rather ripped at times. it's a good alternative pop album. it's still their second worst one (dirty), but that doesn't mean it's bad.

It's weird how all the people who really were vocal about hating it have vacated the board, and how most of the newer crop seem to really like it.
I think it's alright, but nowhere in league with Nurse, which I absolutely love. I think they were trying too hard to leave Geffen with a suprisingly commercial album, and I hope they got that out of their system. My favorite track by far was "Or", which is nothing like the rest of the record. "Pink Steam" is good too, but a bit on the Thurston pop song formula tip. It's a formula I love, but I'd prefer to see them stretch out a bit again. I look forward to the Matador record. |

jesus, ANOTHER rather ripped thread?!!!!! Is it 2006 again?
This album is embarassing. I don't care what band it is, it's a bad bad album. Since no one is here to talk about it, I'll do my impressions of them... "this album fucking sucks fuck you." - Cantankerous ... "yeah, this album souns like a bunch of demos." - Everyneurotic ... who else defected? Oh well. You get the idea! Also, Murray Street was their last great album. If you just like really awesome guitar playing, it's one of the best. |
