What I love most about SY's lyrics is that they are so abstract, dreamy, and ambiguous. Thank you and goodnite.

for me, sonic youth aren't really a lyrics band, this is not to say they don't have some good lyrics, with the amount songs they've written there's bound to be some good stuff in there somewhere... also sonic youth aren't exactly the sort of band that are popular with people who listen to music primarily for lyrics either (i.e. soulless people).

As long as the lyrics work within the context of the piece, I'm good. I could care less about interpreting the meaning behind them blah blah blah.

I think lyrics a very important to a song.Even though i listen to tons of instrumental music i still want something that relates to me in a more verbal way.People who say that lyrics are not important to a song don't have much to say as far as i am concerened.

SY should make more completely instrumental albums.
Lyrics can act as a crutch when you're trying to flesh out a musical idea, and I think they definitely have with SY. |

No one talks about lyrics anymore because this place has become overrun with lame fucking high school twats that only want to discuss the fact that they wear women's pants.
Titanium Expose has some damn good lyrics, as does Cross the Breeze. |

I must say. Kim's lyrics are beautiful in her slow songs. Some of my favorite really.

I love Lee's lyrics. Kim and Thurston write good lyrics at times, but at times they're quite uninteresting, sometimes even bad. Let's just say I don't listen to Sonic Youth because of the lyrics.

Mostly my thoughts. Sonic Youth has written some very fantastic lines but they've also had a lot of horseshit meaningless lyrics. Sonic Youth's music is what does it for me. Lee's songs always have fantastic lyrics, though.

yeah, lee's lyrics at least conjure up some cool imagery. kim and thurston are generally at their best when i don't know what the hell they're trying to communicate, if you look at their worst lyrical offences over the years it's always been songs where the lyrics are not oblique |

EJSTNS????????? what land are you from? Winner's Blues great lyrics actually my favorite of them all. I have them printed and sitting under my keyboard right now cause sometimes I just want to stare at them. Star feild lane???? Jesus is Screaming your name. It all means something and more than one thing Waist...more double meanings. Not meaningless Doctors orders.... Mother came home today wearing a big bouquet. She blew herself away.....Maybe you just don't get this one cause yr a guy. I don't think they just scribble down random shit. They are poets in my opinion. The following is only my opinion, and what I think of when I listen to this song. I have no verification that this is what they are actually saying, but that is the beauty in it. That is what makes it poetry. WINNER'S BLUES ...IFOR BY THE AWAY, GO OUT NOT TODAY MOVE BACK ALONG AND WAIT A LONG LONG TIME NOTHING RUNNING FREE, YOU GOTTA TIME IT ALL (waiting on that call to hook up with the next fix, seems lilke it takes forever and yr at the dealer's mercy, so your time is based on yr drug use) RUN OUT THE DOOR COME BACK WHEN YOU SCORE NEW TIMES WILL COME AND YOU WILL SEE A DOOR INTO THE LION EYE AND NOW I'M GONE (you hook up and get wasted, then soon you see a glimpse of what the drug is doing to you, but your to far gone) AND IT'S OUT AND IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT (it's not just recreation any more you realize yr a junkie fullblown) BUT A LIFE, THAT YOU KNOW (bad habits are real hard to brake) WILL KEEP YOU BOUND IN...SOMETIMES YOU WIN, SOMETIMES YOU LOSE SOMETIMES YOU GOT STILL THE BLUES FOR ME (you can't escape the vicous circle of abuse, it keeps you tied down, you need some help) I COULD RUN AWAY, A LONG TIME TO STAY BURN OUT YOUR EYES, BURN OUT SURPRISE LOOK OUT TODAY YOU KNOW IT'S NOT THE SAME (yr evolving from recreation to addiction) IT'S ALL THE RAGE, IT'S EVERY DAY (It's all you care about, you need it) AND IT'S OUT AND IT'S NOT WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT BUT A LIFE, THAT YOU KNOW WILL KEEP YOU ROUND IN LOVE (yr coming to the realization but with a little glimmer of hope to end the verse instead of fear of quitting)

I don't notice lyrics in music generally... it goes over my head because I concentrate so much on taking in the instrumentation. Even the SY songs with terrible lyrics don't bother me, because I never notice them really.

i like the music. i am not a native-englisch speaker, and one reason, why i prefer english songs is: i dont have to find out, whats going on in the brain of the artist, since there are always some words i dont get by listening. Sometimes, when some asshole posts the lyriks somewehre and i read it, i never listen to the song again, caus then i dont like it anymore, for then i KNOW about it.
Good lyriks are lyriks with no meaning. i like sy lyrics, when they are somewhat like a capture of a impression, like "A view thru the trees to a couple standing in the snow". more a picture for the music than a "message". |

I agree with those who like the obscure, nonsense lyrics. Skip Tracer is prolly my fav sy song. Radical Adults close behind. Both largely to the lyrics.
Something (only thing?) they share with Yes. There is a sense of meaning behind the nonsense. And I guess that's why I don't like RR or Eternal. Seem a little more literal than past stuff.

I keep trying to listen to the lyrics on Rain on Tin but i always get absorbed in the music and don't even hear the lyrics after a certain point.
