i'd recommend John Wesley Harding, my favorite album of his and arguably his most instantly catchy and coherent. most people recommend Blonde on Blonde which is a great album but i can see how someone not into Dylan could totally dislike him when hearing it. John Wesley Harding is just beautiful. i hope you change your mind one day. i did. |

Yes, Radiohead. If someone plays them I don't mind but I get a bit bored listening to them on my own. I've tried falling asleep to them but Thom's voice always jars me awake, then I have to get up and pee.
Debbie Gibson - Electric Youth. I enjoy Out of the Blue and while EY may be the more complex album it really doesn't appeal to me. Her earlier material was much much better. |

addin my two cents i love marquee moon but it took me a few listens before i got really into it. it sounds kind of ordinary at first. but then you get hit by the entire albums just constant flow of amazing and varied songs, and just their overall "vision" is great.
But yes, i havent heard much of it, but I don't quite get the my bloody valentine obsessions. joy division is another one where I dont understand the devotion, although I think their good. |

I don't feel I should like them, because, well, they're crappy. Especially seeing that they refuse to just fucking end it... The only song I like is Paint It Black. (I've basically only heard... like, '40 licks,' and it's all trash, save for Paint It Black, which is an incredible song.

As for Joy Division, they are such an intensely... visceral band... It's almost instinct to listen to them when yr bummed out, and they basically spawned an entire generation of music. Again, with JD, it sticks with you, it alters yr perception of music. And then you learn about Ian Curtis, and it makes you even more fascinated by the band. (I could continue...)

The Soft Bulletin is too overrated. It had good stuff on it but not a whole lot. It killed The FLips. Now they just pander to all the idiots who value SB over their better works (i.e. everything they made before Soft Bulletin). And that really depresses me because they had soooooo much talent for years up until they released that record. They needed to stay experimental (whatever that means to them). Losing Ronlad Jones really killed the band. It allowed Steven (despite his creativity and technical proficiency) to start playing that fucking synthesizer!!! I hate it!! FLips was about noisy guitars not symphonic synths!! It ruined their music!!! I really don't like Dark Side of the Moon that much. Everyone hails it as the greatest Pink Floyd record, but I dissagree. It's dull and boring. Too slow and too mellow. It's music for burnt out hippies. Also The Wall is overrated as well. It has good stuff on it, but everyone treats it as some ladmark masterpeice when it really isn't!. I'm not the biggest fan of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn either. Overrated. Love Syd, and it's a great album, but that record gets boring in some places; tedious. And a lot of Gratfeul Dead stuff. Tedious. I too wasn't the biggest fan of Black Flag's Damaged. I liked only a quarter of the record, especially Rise Above, best song on the record. And everyone treats My War as some great punk rock achievement. It SUCKS! It's a slow, dull record with a lot of sludgy guitars. Anyone can do that! As much as I respect Henry Rollins, I have to say pre-Rollins Black Flag was better, but it has nothing really to do with Henry, Greg Ginn was the songwriter, not Rollins. Ginn just burnt himself out. BUt I love SLanted and Enchanted!! Great Pavement record.

The first Dinosaur album was great too... And Loveless isn't praised too much, by far. It's pure genius. EDIT: 69 posts. Wah. I think I'm going to stop posting. |
