I don't like Goo or Dirty as much as Bad Moon Rising, or anything predating Goo for that matter. They are capable of writing decent pop songs, but the novelty wears off easily. I haven't heard anything off of the new album so I can't comment on it at all.
Anyway, the person who started this thread is incredibly misguided. I have no problem with someone preferring their 90s output over their 80s output, but surely you can find a better example of the band's underdeveloped songwriting skills. Sister? Come on now.

Teenage Riot may be one of their best and most popular songs, but I find it to be very atypical of SY. It's very pop compared to most of their work, so I don't find it to be a good example of what makes SY's music what it is. As for number of times played live, I'm surprised to see that White Kross wins that contest, according to this link: http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/songstats.html |

I'm not misguided, I just have my own opinion. I happen to like a certain aspect of Sonic Youth that is unpopular here.

It's boring and obvious to think that Geffen SY is a sellout....why not admit that it's actually better? It obviously is.

No one was claiming that they sold out. For the record, I don't believe they ever have. If I hated "Geffen SY" I would hate everything they've done on the label, and as far as I know I don't hate any of it. I quite like all of it. I'm simply saying that, while their pop songs are quite good, they don't have as much staying power as the other stuff. This is not an opinion reserved solely for Sonic Youth. I think the same about many bands. Pop songs are easy to listen to, so they get played a lot, but I find that I tire of them easier than songs that aren't as immediately accessible. Have you ever thought that maybe you should give their pre-Goo albums more attention? It doesn't even seem like you've listened to them, especially if you consider Sister to be an album full of bad songwriting.

lol...
I have listened to the whole catalogue more than once, and been a Sonic Youth fan for years and years. And I find the early albums obviously more dispensable and irrelevant than the later. There are a few good songs on all of the early albums, but for the most part the first truly good albums are Goo and Dirty, and I prefer the albums after those much more even than those.

It's a fun song. I just love it for the Chuck D appearance and Kim's voice.
